No. 1 USC Bounces Back With Road Win At No. 5 Pacific
November 05, 2017 | Men's Water Polo, Features
Senior goalie McQuin Baron breaks the 1,000 career save barrier with his first of 16 stops today.
STOCKTON, CALIF. — The No. 1 USC men's water polo team was back in winning mode in piecing together a balanced effort to beat No. 5 host Pacific today in an 11-7 decision in Stockton. The Trojans scored the first four goals of the game and shut out the Tigers in the second period to establish control. Senior goalie McQuin Baron notched his 1,000th career save with his first of 16 stops in the win, while eight different Trojans got on the scoresheet to lift USC to 22-2 overall on the year.
James Walters opened the scoring once again, finishing off a pass from Thomas Dunstan to light the scoring fire for the Trojans. Dunstan would punch up a goal of his own soon after to make it a run, and Lachlan Edwards added to it with back-to-back blasts from 2-meters, and the Trojans were enjoying a 4-0 lead on the Tigers just six minutes into the match. Pacific was able to break through next, however, managing back-to-back scores within 30 seconds of one another, and it was a 4-2 scoreline at the end of the first frame. In the second, the Trojans hit their stride. With the defense clicking and Baron continuing to rack up saves, the USC offense got four new scorers on the docket. Blake Edwards would hand-deliver two goals, including a counterattack finish that had the Trojans up 9-2 by halftime. Marko Vavic had nabbed the steal to set up that counter, going along with the freshman's goal that started it all in the second. Vavic's slam at the post sparked the five-goal rally for the Trojans, with Marin Dasic and Matteo Morelli also drumming up key goals as USC put itself solidly in the driver's seat.
Pacific tried to crack USC's resolve with back-to-back scores to start the second half, scoring on a 6-on-5 and then converting a 5-meter penalty shot to make it 9-4. Grant Stein and Vavic would pad out the USC advantage in the next stretch, however, and USC was gripping an 11-4 advantage entering the fourth. There, USC's offense would come up empty while Pacific managed three more goals — including another penalty shot for the Tigers — but USC's margin was too much for Pacific to overcome. As Baron wrapped up his 16-save outing in goal, the Trojans held tight to the victory, finishing out a road split with an 11-7 win over the No. 5 Tigers.
USC now returns to Los Angeles to set up for its final regular-season contest of the year. The Trojans will pay a visit to crosstown rival UCLA for a 1 p.m. MPSF clash on Saturday (Nov. 11) in Westwood. That game will be key in determining seedings for the coming MPSF Tournament as well as holding NCAA berth implications.
