November 07, 2017 | Men's Golf, Features
Justin Suh maintains individual lead after second-round 66.
Freshman Kaito Onishi fired a course-record 8-under 63 while junior and individual leader Justin Suh followed his first-round 67 with a 66 as the USC men's golf team vaulted into first place after the second day of the Saint Mary's Invitational at the Poppy Hills G.C. in Pebble Beach, Calif., on Tuesday (Nov. 7).
The Trojans, looking for their first win of the season in the final fall event, combined for a season-best 16-under 268 to take over the lead at 13-under 555 (287-268), a stroke better than second-place Stanford. Host Saint Mary's is third at 3-under 565 with Colorado State fourth at 1-over 569.
Onishi turned in his best round as a Trojan with a flawless afternoon that saw him sink six birdies and an eagle without a bogey, moving him into second place at 6-under 136 (73-63). Starting the day on the 10th hole, he was 4-under on both nines.
The only player better after 36 holes is Suh, the nation's new No. 1 player. Suh maintained the lead at 9-under 133 (67-66) after another strong round that saw him go 2-under going out (with an eagle on 18) and 3-under coming in with five birdies on the day.
Suh now has eight rounds under 70 in 11 outings this fall season and has lowered his current stroke average to 67.91.
The entire Trojan crew played strong Tuesday. Sophomore Kyle Suppa registered a season-best 3-under 68 to pull into a tie for 26th at 1-over 143 (75-68), tied with, among others, freshman teammate Issei Tanabe (72-71), who was even. Junior Sam Kim is tied for 55th at 6-over 148 (77-71) after an even round while sophomore Ryan Slater, playing individually, is tied for 69th at 8-over 150 (77-73).
USC's 268 was its best round since posting the same number in the second round of the 2017 Amer Ari Invitational in February.
The Trojans tee off in the final round at 9:25 a.m.
