USC Wins First Event Of Season, Justin Suh A Medalist For Second Time
November 08, 2017 | Men's Golf, Features
Kaito Onishi ties for second, Kyle Suppa ties for sixth.
Junior Justin Suh completed his wire-to-wire title with another near flawless performance while freshman Kaito Onishi tied for second and sophomore Kyle Suppa tied for sixth, both with collegiate bests, as the USC men's golf team pulled away from the field at the Saint Mary's Invitational to win its first tournament of the season at the Poppy Hills G.C. in Pebble Beach, Calif., on Wednesday (Nov. 8).
Â
The Trojans secured their first victory of the 2017-18 campaign by following up Tuesday's 16-under performance with a 15-under today to finish the 54-hole event at 28-under 824 (287-268-269), holding off No. 13 Stanford, which finished at 22-under 830 (283-273-274) while Colorado State was third at 12-under 840 (283-286-271).
Â
"This was a total team effort," USC Coach Chris Zambri said. "Justin has been so strong for us this year, but we had others step up this week. Every guy on our team came up big. It's a great way to head into the break."
Â
Suh completed his wire-to-wire win at 13-under 200 (67-66-67) for his second title this year, his third top 2 and his fourth top 9 in as many fall events. He posted six more birdies today to give him 15 for the tournament plus an eagle against just four bogeys.
Â
Onishi, who tied for second at 8-under 205 (73-63-69) for his best result of his still young Trojan career, pulled to within a stroke of first early in the round but could not quite keep up with Suh, the nation's top-ranked golfers.
Â
Suh's finish today marked his ninth round under 70 in 12 outings and lowered his stroke average this season to an eye-popping 67.83.
Â
"Poppy Hills felt like I was back at home," Suh said "With the help of Coach Zambri and (Associate Head Coach) Justin Silverstein, we were able to commit to each shot throughout the tournament with confidence. Also, being able to play with a teammate made it both fun and exciting. I'm glad to have got the win with these guys."
Â
Suppa, meanwhile, was the hottest Trojan today, rallying into the top 10 to tie for sixth at 6-under 207 (75-68-64) thanks to a collegiate-best-tying 7-under final round that included six birdies and an eagle on 1. After a bogey to start play on 10, he finished the final 17 holes at 8-under.
Â
Junior Sam Kim tied for 43rd at 4-over 217 (77-71-69), finishing with his third round under par this year with three birdies and an eagle on 18. Freshman Issei Tanabe tied for 68th at 11-over 224 (72-71-81). Sophomore Ryan Slater, playing individually, tied for 48th at 5-over 218 (77-73-68) and had five birdies over the final round.
