No. 20 Cal Keeps USC Women At Bay In 76-64 Pac-12 Opener In Berkeley
December 29, 2017 | Women's Basketball, Features
Trojans get another double-double from Kristen Simon, but fall to the Golden Bears.
BERKELEY, CALIF. — The USC women's basketball team went toe-to-toe with No. 20 California in tonight's Pac-12 opener in Berkeley, but the Golden Bears depth won the day in a 76-64 Cal victory. Five Trojans scored, with Kristen Simon serving up her 22nd career double-double with 11 rebounds and a game-high 20 points. Cal, however, had eight Golden Bears score as the hosts fended off their visitors. USC goes to 10-2 overall and an 0-1 start to Pac-12 action, while Cal improves to 10-2, 1-0.
Cal led by as much as 17 points during the third, only to see the Trojans carve that down to a four-point margin early in the fourth. In the end, it was a strong overall shooting effort by Cal that kept USC at bay. Cal shot 45.6 percent from the floor, went 17-of-20 from the line and nailed seven 3-pointers to counter the Trojans' efforts to close the gap. USC shot 38.1 percent and was 13-of-17 from the line while hitting a season-low three 3-pointers.
Both teams had four players finish in double digits, with USC's Simon leading the pack with her 20 points along with 11 boards. Minyon Moore delivered five assists to go with her 14, while Aliyah Mazyck added 13 for the Trojan cause, hitting a pair of threes along the way. USC's Sadie Edwards had 10 points — all in the second half — to stand as USC's fourth double-digit scorer. Cal, meanwhile, was led by Kristine Anigwe's double-double on 16 points and 13 rebounds, with Penina Davidson scoring 15 points, Mikayla Cowling adding 13, and Jaelyn Brown with 10.
The lead changed hands four times in the first frame before Cal worked ahead and gripped a slim 19-17 advantage after 10 minutes of action. USC would come up with just 10 points in the second and fell behind 36-27 by halftime. Cal made a 7-0 run to open the third and put USC on its heels, but the Trojans were undeterred. Sadie Edwards would catch fire in the third, delivering eight points in the last five minutes of that frame to help USC carve the deficit to single digits, down 53-45 entering the fourth. That's where USC was able to get it to a four-point game after Jordan Adams buried USC's third three of the game and then Minyon Moore took it to the hoop, making it a 56-52 margin. Cal would push back, though, and held off the Trojans down the stretch for the conference-opening 76-64 win.
USC now turns to face Stanford in a New Year's Eve matchup, set for 1 p.m. on Sunday (Dec. 31) in Palo Alto. The game will be televised on Pac-12 Los Angeles and Pac-12 Bay Area.
