Former Trojan continues magical run as an amateur since graduating USC in 2013.
Stewart Hagestad's golf resume has needed frequent updates in the past two years and will need another refresher now that the former Trojan has been selected as one of 10 amateurs to represent the U.S. in the 2017 Walker Cup set for Sept. 9-10 at the L.A. C.C. North Course.
Â
Hagestad, a walk-on at USC who graduated from Troy in 2013, was one of eight Trojans who competed in the just completed U.S. Amateur.
Â
He has played as an amateur in two majors this year, capturing the Silver Cup as the low amateur at the 2017 Masters, tying for 36th, and also competed at the U.S. Open.
Â
Hagestad earned his Masters berth after winning the 2016 U.S. Mid-Amateur Championships by defeating Scott Harvey in 37 holes. The second-youngest champion of the event, Hagestad produced the largest comeback victory (4 down with 5 holes to play) since a 36-hole Mid-Amateur final was introduced in 2001.
Â
Hagestad, who was chosen the 2016 Metropolitan Golf Association Player of the Year, won last year's Met Amateur, edging Ethan Ng in 38 holes. He has played in 12 USGA championships, including eight U.S. Amateurs.
At 26, Hagestad, from Newport Beach, Calif., is the oldest member of the American squad that will take on Great Britain and Ireland in the 46th meeting of the Walker Cup. The other nine Americans include: Cameron Champ, 21, of Sacramento, Calif.; Doug Ghim, 21, of Arlington Heights, Ill.; Maverick McNealy, 21, of Portola Valley, Calif.; Collin Morikawa, 20, of La Canada Flintridge, Calif.; Doc Redman, 19, of Raleigh, N.C.; Scottie Scheffler, 21, of Dallas, Texas; Braden Thornberry, 20, of Olive Branch, Miss.; Norman Xiong, 18, of Canyon Lake, Calif.; and Will Zalatoris, 21, of Plano, Texas.
Â
"It's an absolute dream come true," Hagestad said. "It's a tremendous honor to be selected and I feel very fortunate to be chosen to represent the USGA. Furthermore, to represent the membership of the club, the SCGA, MGA, and the United States as a whole is something I've thought about every day for two straight years. It's an incredible sense of accomplishment, but at the same time, I look forward to spending time with my teammates and having the mutual common goal of bringing back the Walker Cup to the United States."
Â
"Everyone in the Trojan golf program is proud and happy for Stewart," USC 12th-year Coach Chris Zambri said. "Stewart had a clear goal to make that team and he's done it. He's a great story."
