No. 12 Trojans Down Cyclones 2-0
September 10, 2017 | Women's Soccer, Features
The Trojans tallied two goals in the first 20 minutes.
LOS ANGELES – The No. 12 Trojans scored early and often, holding onto a two goal advantage to defeat Iowa State 2-0 at McAlister Field on Sunday afternoon.
"Once again I thought we started the game well. The two early goals were fantastic. Also give credit to our back line and goalkeeping, I thought today was one of our best efforts in that area. However, I was disappointed in our ability to maintain our competitiveness and energy throughout the 90 minutes of the game. That is something we have to improve going forward," said head coach Keidane McAlpine.
"A lot of credit needs to be given to Iowa State, they found themselves after the first water break and really stepped up their pressure and their level. All credit to them and we need to be better at closing out games, continuing to press forward."
The Trojans (4-1) scored their fastest goal of the season to get on the board early, as junior forward Leah Pruitt tallied her first goal of the season in the 7th minute as she took a ball that was loose in the box and turned from eight yards out to bury the shot into the right corner.
Then in the 19th minute sophomore defender Julia Bingham tallied her first career goal, as she took a pass from Sydney Sladek off a short corner by Savannah DeMelo and drilled a low shot into the left corner from the top of the box to put the Trojans up 2-0.
The Trojan defense held strong throughout the first half, not allowing a Cyclone (2-5-1) shot in the first half. The Trojans on the other hand tallied 13 shots.
In the second half the Cyclones continued to battle, tallying seven shots to the Trojans' eight. They also collected six corner kicks, all coming in the second half.
Trojan goalkeeper Kaylie Collins tallied her second career shutout in the victory, without needing to make a true save.
Overall Anthony led the way for the Trojans with seven total shots on the day, while Brooke Tasker led the way with two shots for the Cyclones.
The Trojans will head back out on the road next weekend, visiting Loyola Marymount on Friday, Sept. 15 and then USD on Sunday, Sept. 17.
