No. 12 USC Completes Nail-Biting Comeback 2-1 Win at LMU
September 15, 2017 | Women's Soccer, Features
The Trojans tally two goals in the last five minutes of regulation to earn the road win.
LOS ANGELES – The No. 12-ranked Trojans tallied goals from Leah Pruitt and Erika Okuma in the final five minutes of the match to complete a nail-biting come-from-behind victory over host Loyola Marymount, 2-1 on Friday evening at Sullivan Field.
"The fans got their money's worth tonight, all the credit goes to LMU with the energy that they gave and how hard they played in this game," said head coach Keidane McAlpine. "It was just a good college soccer game and we stayed persistent and used the experience from last weekend to find another comeback win. As much as I don't like coming from behind, I am glad that we have shown resiliency and have been able to do it."
On the game-winning goal by Erika Okuma in the 88th minute of play, McAlpine said, "I have to give credit to Erika [Okuma], even though she didn't play very many minutes on the evening, she was able to come off the bench and do her job. Last weekend we were not able to find that kind of production off the bench and all the credit goes to her tonight, coming out and being able to execute the way she did was fantastic."
The Trojans (5-1) dominated possession throughout the match, but struggled to find the back of the net. In the first half the Trojans tallied 10 shots, while holding the Lions (4-2-2) to zero shots. USC forward Pruitt had multiple chances, collecting six of the team's 10 first-half shots.
In the 66th minute, the Lions took advantage of an opportunity off a free kick from just inside the Trojan defensive half, as the ball played in came across the box and was finished far post by Melissa Lewis to put the Lions up 1-0.
From that point on the Trojans put the after burners on, really pushing for that equalizer, while the Lions packed things in defensively. In the second half the Trojans tallied 15 shots to the Lions' seven shots.
With less than five minutes left, the Trojans were able to finally break through and tie the game up in the 86th minute. Pruitt received a ball at the top of the area and was able to shake her defender with a nice turn and finished right inside the near post to tie the ballgame up. The goal was Pruitt's second of the year.
Then in the 88th minute, less than three minutes after she checked into the match, junior defender Okuma made the best of her time in the match, picking an ideal time for her first collegiate goal as she took a square ball from Nicole Molen and fired a beauty of a shot from 35 yards out that finished top shelf in the near post to give the Trojans the 2-1 lead.
The Trojan defense was then able to weather the last couple minutes of the match as the Lions had a few chances of their own to hold onto the come-from-behind victory. The win is their second in comeback style in three games, as they defeated Santa Clara in the same way last Friday at McAlister Field.
The Trojans will be back in action on Sunday, Sept. 17 as they travel to USD for their final nonconference tune-up at 1 p.m. PT.
