DeMelo's Two Goal Day Puts The Trojans Past USD, 3-1
September 17, 2017 | Women's Soccer, Features
For the second-straight day the Trojans completed a comeback victory.
SAN DIEGO – The No. 12 Trojans take care of business at USD, defeating the host Toreros 3-1 behind two goals by Savannah DeMelo on Sunday afternoon at Torero Stadium to finish off nonconference play.
For the second-straight game the Trojans (6-1) had to come-from-behind, as they surrendered a goal just 18 seconds into the match, when a run down the left side and a shot from the top of the box by the Toreros' Summer Mason put the Trojans down early, 1-0.
However, the Trojans soon found themselves in the match and settled in, generating more offensive opportunities.
In the 17th minute the Trojans broke through with the equalizer, as Sydney Myers made a nice run down the left flank and found a waiting Alex Anthony in the box who finished things off for her third goal of the year.
Then just four minutes later the Trojans struck again, as Savannah DeMelo took a feed from Anthony at the top of the box and bent one in with the outside of her foot into the left corner to give the Trojans the lead, 2-1.
At the half the Trojans outshot the Toreros (1-7), 7-3.
The second half continued as the first half ended, with the Trojan offense generating a lot of opportunities. In the 50th minute DeMelo found the back of the net for the second time today, slotting it home on a nice ball played forward by Tara McKeown. The two-goal outing for the redshirt freshman is the first of her career, as well as the first time this season any Trojan has tallied two goals in one game.
Down the stretch in the second half many Trojans saw game action, including senior goalkeeper Julia Murphy who played the final 17:26 of the match in her first action this season. Junior forward Hailey Hite also saw her first game action since suffering an ACL tear in October 2016.
The Trojans begin conference play next weekend as they travel to Utah for a 1 p.m. PT match on Saturday, Sept. 23. The game will be televised live on Pac-12 Networks.
