No. 10 Trojans Play No. 25 Utah to a Double Overtime Draw
September 23, 2017 | Women's Soccer, Features
The Trojans outshot the Utes but were unable to find the back of the net.
SALT LAKE CITY – Despite outshooting No. 25 Utah 18-11, the No. 10-ranked Trojans were unlucky in not being able to find the back of the net and settle for a double-overtime 0-0 tie to begin Pac-12 play on Saturday afternoon at Ute Soccer Field.
"This game is exactly what I expected," said head coach Keidane McAlpine. "Utah is a very well-coached team and they execute their game plan very well. They adapt within the game and they challenged us today. I thought our team performed well, especially defensively. We were a bit unfortunate not to find one today, but all in all a decent performance to start out conference play on the road against a top 25 team.
The Trojans (6-1-1) were led by an outstanding day on the pitch by freshman midfielder Savannah DeMelo, who tallied six shots on the day, four of those on goal. The Bellflower, Calif., native, was involved in one of the key moments of the day, when she took a penalty kick for the Trojans in the waning minutes of the second half, but unfortunately it was saved by Utah (5-2-2) keeper Carly Nelson. On the day Nelson was strong for the Utes, making 10 big saves.
Trojan goalkeeper Kaylie Collins was equally as big, making four saves on the day, but none bigger than a beautiful diving save to her left off a free kick at the 35 minute mark in the first half. She also came up big on many of the Utes' eight corner kicks, including two in the second overtime period, coming off her line to collect the ball.
In the first half the Trojans and Utes went back-and-forth, with each side tallying six shots in the period.
In the second half however, the Trojans dominated most of the run of play, tallying 10 shot opportunities to just one by the Utes. The Trojans also drew four corner kicks in that period, but just could not find the back of the net. Five of Nelson's 10 saves for Utah came in the second half.
In the first overtime period the Trojans tallied one shot and did not allow to Utes a chance, but in the second overtime period the Utes had four shots to one for the Trojans. However, that one shot came off the foot of Alex Anthony and it was an excellent strike, but was saved by the keeper Nelson for Utah.
The Trojan defense, anchored by redshirt senior Dominique Randle and goalkeeper Collins earned just their second shutout of the year. The only other shutout came in a 2-0 victory at Missouri.
The Trojans will return home to host Oregon State this upcoming Thursday, Sept. 28 at McAlister Field. Get your tickets at usctrojans.com/tickets.
