No. 7 Trojans with Most Complete Game of Season in 4-0 Victory Over Oregon State
September 28, 2017 | Women's Soccer, Features
Junior forward Leah Pruitt with a brace in the match.
LOS ANGELES – The No. 7 Trojans put together their most complete game of the season so far in a 4-0 victory over visiting Oregon State at McAlister Field on Thursday afternoon.
Head coach Keidane McAlpine said, "I thought this was our most complete game by far. From start to finish I thought the energy and willingness to compete was fantastic. I thought our defensive performance was the best of the year, only giving up two shots total and no corners. That kind of a team defensive performance starts with our forwards and ends with our goalkeeper. Also the way we shared the ball in the final third was fantastic. This is something that we need to build from and I think we can."
The four goal day for the Trojans (7-1-1, 1-0-1 Pac-12) was the highest offensive output of the year for the Trojans, while the defense tallied their fourth shutout of the season.
Junior forward/midfielder Leah Pruitt led the way for the Trojans with a brace, getting things started with a goal in the third minute and then capped off the scoring with a finish in the 87th minute. The two-goal outing is the first of her Trojan career.
After Pruitt's early goal, the Trojans tallied one more in the first half, a pretty header by senior midfielder Nicole Molen off a corner kick by redshirt freshman midfielder Savannah DeMelo. For Molen it was her first goal of the year, while DeMelo's assist was her first of three on the day.
At the half the Trojans outshot the Beavers (3-5-2, 0-2-0 Pac-12) 10-1 and tallied seven corner kicks of their own while not allowing a Beaver corner.
In the second half redshirt junior Sydney Myers tallied her first goal as a Trojan with a pretty finish from the left corner of the box in the 68th minute, making it 3-0.
Pruitt then finished things off with her goal in the 87th minute to give the Trojans their biggest single-game goal output of four.
Redshirt freshman goalkeeper Kaylie Collins did not make a save in the shutout victory, her fourth shutout of the season, while Beaver goalkeeper Bella Geist made 11 saves on the day.
DeMelo's three-assist day ties the USC program record for most assists in a match.
Sydney Johnson and Erika Okuma also tallied assists on the day, with Johnson assisting on Pruitt's final goal and Okuma getting the assist on Myers' goal.
The Trojans will be back in action on Sunday, Oct. 1 as they host Oregon at 1 p.m. PT. The game is a special Dads and Daughters game, and for just $25 fans get two game tickets, a USC stein, USC insulated water bottle, two hot dogs, two root beers and the first 150 packages also receive a commemorative 2016 NCAA Championship poster.
