September 26, 2017 | Men's Golf, Features
Junior wins Trinity Forest Invitational at 10-under, Trojans finish fifth.
Junior Justin Suh completed a superb 54 holes of play with a 4-under final round to win the Trinity Forest Invitational at 10-under for his second career collegiate title at the Trinity Forest G.C. in Dallas on Tuesday (Sept. 26).
Â
The Trojans as a team finished fifth at 3-under 849 (282-284-283), 14 back of winner Florida (835), which closed play with a 9-under final round. Auburn and Texas Tech tied for second (845) while Texas was fourth (847).
Â
Suh claimed his second college crown with a 10-under 203 (67-69-67) for a three-stroke victory over Florida's Gorden Neale, who closed with a final round 63. Suh now has posted four sub-70 rounds in his first six outings this season and his 10-under showing is his best as a Trojan. After a bogey on 2 today, Suh finished the final 16 holes at 5-under with five birdies
Â
"My overall golf game felt solid," Suh said about the tournament, "but what specifically helped me this week was my mental approach. The work I've put in with (team psychologist) Kevin Sverduk showed throughout the highs and lows of the event."
Â
This is Suh's first win since capturing the Western Intercollegiate earlier this spring as a sophomore at 9-under 204 (69-68-67). It is also his second top 10 finish in as many events this fall.
Â
Sophomore Kyle Suppa was USC's next highest finisher, tying for 20th at 1-over 214 (72-70-72) with a four-birdie round. Freshman Kaito Onishi tied for 24th at 2-over 215 (71-73-71) with three birdies today.
Â
Sophomore Ryan Slater tied for 42nd at 5-over 218 (72-73-73), sophomore Cheng Jin tied for 49th at 7-over 220 (72-72-76) and freshman Owen Calvin-Smith tied for 75th at 19-over 232 (75-80-77).
