No. 7 Trojans Push Late, Fall 2-1 at Kansas
September 03, 2017 | Women's Soccer, Features
Trojans with opportunities late, unable to overcome 2-0 deficit in loss.
LAWRENCE, Kansas – The No. 7 Trojans pushed late for the equalizer, but were unable to overcome a 2-0 deficit, falling 2-1 to the host Jayhawks on Sunday evening at Rock Chalk Park.
"All the credit goes to the Jayhawk team and fan base," said head coach Keidane McAlpine. "It was a great atmosphere. I was very disappointed with our performance in the first half. We did not bring enough energy to compete in a game of this magnitude. We played a better second half, but when you give away 45 minutes to a good team you don't give yourself the best chance to win, and that's the lesson that we learned tonight."
The Trojans (2-1) settled in to outshoot the Jayhawks (5-1) 13-6, including 9 to 1 on the second half, but were unable to find the back of the net. The lone goal on the day for the Trojans came in the 74th minute, down 2-0, as Sydney Sladek was taken down in the box, setting up a penalty kick for the Trojans. Redshirt senior Alex Anthony took the penalty kick and finished it off to put the Trojans on the board, 2-1.
The Trojans pushed down the stretch, including a great opportunity from Anthony just minutes after her penalty kick finish, turning and rattling one off the crossbar. Then in the 80th minute, Anthony played a ball in for forward Leah Pruitt, who tried to get on the receiving end in the box. It bounced around and looked to get past the Jayhawks' keeper, but she was able to collect it.
The Jayhawks first struck in the 13th minute, as Grace Hagan beat her defender down the right flank and slipped a pass to Katie McClure who touched it home.
The Trojans had opportunities as they settled in down the stretch in the first half, but at the half the Trojans were being outshot by the Jayhawks, 5-4.
The Trojans dialed up the intensity in the second half, pushing the tempo and generating opportunities early. However, in the 69th minute the Trojans were unlucky, as a tough ball was played back to goalkeeper Kaylie Collins, and it took a strange bounce and she was unable to collect it, and it found the back of the net for an own goal, giving the Jayhawks a 2-0 lead.
Anthony, who led the Trojans with five of the team's 13 shots, tallied the penalty kick goal in the 74th minute, giving the Trojans new life, but they were unable to put away the equalizer.
Collins, who made one save on the day, took the loss for the Trojans, the first of her career. Jayhawk keeper Maddie Dobyns earned the win.
The Trojans will return home on Friday, Sept. 8 to host Santa Clara at 2:30 p.m. PT. The game will be televised live on Pac-12 Networks.
