USC Women Stage Stellar Comeback To Upset No. 16 Oregon State 65-61
January 07, 2018 | Women's Basketball, Features
Trojan defense steps up big to overcome a 17-point deficit and beat the Beavers at Galen Center.
LOS ANGELES, CALIF. — The USC women's basketball team forced 16 second-half turnovers out of visiting No. 16 Oregon State to key a fierce comeback upset as the Trojans upended the Beavers 65-61 at Galen Center. Pesky USC defense helped turn the tide on what was once a 17-point deficit to net the Trojans' first win over a ranked team this season. USC improves to 11-4 overall and 1-3 in Pac-12 play with the win, while Oregon State goes to 11-4, 2-2.
Oregon State shot 50 percent from beyond the arc in the first half, dropping seven 3-pointers to turn what had been a tight one-point game into a 15-point Beaver advantage during the second quarter before USC took a small bite out of it to make it a 40-28 score at the break. The Trojans shot 45.8 percent in the first half, but OSU was hitting at a 51.6 percent clip from the floor to hold the lead. USC would fall into a 17-point hole during the third, only to stage a 12-0 rally at the end of the frame to carve the deficit down to four. A series of USC takeaways helped the Trojans claw back ahead, going up 60-59 with 1:34 to go, then making a push to victory on a bucket from Kristen Simon and two calm free throws from Minyon Moore to hold on for the 65-61 win.
Oregon State would land just one 3-pointer in the second half, finishing the game going 47.1 percent from the floor and 42.1 percent beyond the arc (8-of-19). USC finished up shooting 46.9 from the floor after outscoring the Beavers 38-21 in the second half. The Trojan defense forced 27 turnovers by the Beavers, making nine of its 13 steals during the second half to interrupt OSU's offense. By the final buzzer, USC had received a game-high 21 points from Kristen Simon along with 17 from Sadie Edwards and 14 from Aliyah Mazyck, who nabbed four of those steals in the second half. Minyon Moore went 7-of-8 from the line to finish with nine points to go along with five assists. Oregon State was led by Marie Gülich's 16 points and 14 from Mikayla Pivec.
Things were neck-and-neck in the early goings of the game before turnovers interrupted the flow on both ends. After Sadie Edwards cut the OSU lead down to one at 14-13 with 3:25 on the clock in the first, Oregon State landed a 3-pointer and then ended the frame with a bucket and a buzzer-beating three while the Trojans misfired to trail it 22-13 after 10 minutes of action. OSU would open up the second with another back-breaking three — the Beavers' fourth of the game — to put USC at a double-digit deficit, down 25-13. Kristen Simon would snap OSU's 11-0 rally with a bucket in the paint, only to see the Beavers dump in another 3-pointer moments later. OSU kept firing from 3-point range while USC looked to counter in the paint. Simon worked her way into double digits for the 14th game this season with a bucket to end the half with OSU up 40-28.
True to form, OSU landed yet another 3-pointer early in the third as USC fell into a 48-28 hole. With 3:45 on the clock, Edwards joined Simon in double digits on a nice take to the hoop. That — accompanied by some tough USC defense — sparked a Trojan rally that saw Simon slip in two free throws and Aliyah Mazyck finish off a steal to get the score to 49-39 with 1:43 to go in the third. Mazyck would follow that with two more picks that turned into Trojan points. Minyon Moore got to the line for two free-throws, then Mazyck followed her steal with a bucket, and USC was within reach, down 49-43 with 1:10 to go in the third. Putting the finishing touch on USC's surge, after yet another USC takeaway, was Sadie Edwards, who laid it in to make it a 12-0 Trojan rally to cut the margin to a 49-45 OSU lead entering the fourth.
Edwards struck again out of the gates of the fourth with back-to-back buckets around an OSU score in the paint. More pesky defense saw Moore pester the Beavers and Mazyck come up with the steal and finish that tugged it back to a one-point game for the first time since the first quarter, with USC knocking on the door at 52-51 with 6:20 on the clock. Minutes later, Mazyck hit Simon for a score in the paint before USC forced a five-second violation by the Beavers to take back the ball, down 55-53. With 2:15 on the clock, Mazyck landed USC's first 3-pointer of the second half to tug it to a one-point game again. Then Simon stepped to the stripe with 1:34 remaining and drilled them, giving USC its first lead since the first three minutes of the game, up 60-59. OSU delivered down low to snag back the lead, only to see Simon do the same to get USC ahead 62-61 in the final minute. Moore was fouled over the back collecting a defensive board next and hit the front end to make it 63-61 Trojans with 29 ticks to go. More tough Trojan defense ensued, forcing an OSU turnover with 8.8 seconds on the clock. Sent to the stripe under a second later, Moore coolly knocked down both, netting a 65-61 advantage for the Trojans that the Beavers could not answer as USC emerged with the comeback upset win.
USC now turns to take a Pac-12 trip to the mountain schools next week. The Trojans will take on Colorado at 4 p.m. MT on Friday (Jan. 12) in Boulder before heading to Salt Lake City to face Utah at 10 a.m. MT on Sunday (Jan. 14).
