Nic Porter Has His Fourth MPSF Newcomer of the Week Pick
November 12, 2018 | Men's Water Polo, Features
Freshman goalie made key stops in No. 1 USC’s win over No. 2 UCLA to wrap the regular season.
Just days after the USC men's water polo team collected its 11th straight victory, freshman goalie Nic Porter has collected the Trojans' ninth MPSF Newcomer of the Week award of 2018. Now a four-time selection, Porter matches fellow freshman Hannes Daube's tally of honors to date. Sam Krutonog also has a win to his name, making it nine USC newcomer accolades out of the 11 dispensed by the conference this season.
In the top-ranked Trojans' regular-season finale — a rivalry matchup against No. 2 UCLA — Porter made nine saves, including a vital stop in the final minute to sidestep a potential late winning goal by the visiting Bruins. Porter's ninth save of his first rivalry game secured an 11-11 tie entering the final minute of regulation. USC would go on to score with 19 seconds to go, leaving the Trojans with the 12-11 win and the No. 2 seed in the MPSF Tournament. In addition to his nine saves in the victory, Porter also had an assist for the Trojans. He's now averaging 9.77 saves and 7.03 goals-against per game in his 15 appearances in the cage this year.
Porter and the Trojans play host to the coming MPSF Tournament, which runs Nov. 16-18 at Uytengsu Aquatics Center. For more information, tickets and schedule, visit the Tournament Central page.
