USC Women Surge To 82-39 Win Over UC Santa Barbara
November 15, 2018 | Women's Basketball, Features
USC manufactured several scoring rallies to stay in control at Galen Center.
LOS ANGELES, CALIF. — The USC women's basketball team muscled its way to is largest margin of victory of the season, topping visiting UC Santa Barbara with a hearty 82-39 Trojan victory at Galen Center. For the first time in these early goings of the campaign, four Women of Troy hit double figures to help USC along to the sizable win and a 3-0 start.
USC hit at a 47.5 percent clip in the game, landing eight 3-pointers and outrebounding the Gauchos 41-26. The Trojans also nabbed 13 steals in an interruptive effort that helped generate 28 points off turnovers. UC Santa Barbara shot 24 percent from the floor tonight. The USC offense was led by Aliyah Mazyck's 21 points, followed closely by Minyon Moore's 18. Ja'Tavia Tapley hit double digits for the first time this season with 13 points, and Mariya Moore added 11. No Gauchos got to double figures in tonight's tilt, with Briana Anugwom and Coco Miller leading UCSB on offense with eight and seven points, respectively.
USC and UC Santa Barbara were tangled up early in this one, but a 6-0 USC surge created a little space for the Trojans with help from back-to-back buckets from Aliyah Mazyck. A 10-5 USC advantage would get carved down to 12-9 with a minute to go in the first, but the Trojans had the final word as Ja'Tavia Tapley hit the back end of her trip to the line and Minyon Moore scored next to make it 15-9 USC at the end of the first frame.
That momentum would heat up further in the second as USC fired off the first 16 points of the second quarter as the Trojans' defensive pressure was producing points on the other end. Three-point plays by the Moore sisters were followed by two more takes from Tapley, and USC was enjoying a 31-9 advantage with 6:40 on the clock. After UCSB free throws snapped the USC surge at 19-0, both teams changed course and found success from beyond the arc. For a four-minute span, only 3-pointers were dropped on both ends. For USC, Shalexxus Aaron, Desiree Caldwell, Mazyck and Mariya Moore all struck from 3-point land, and USC would grip a 45-22 lead at halftime.
Another hefty USC rally came in the third, this one sparked by a 3-pointer from Mariya Moore that set fire to a 16-0 run to lead it 63-24 as Moore hit Cheyanne Wallace for the capper on the surge. The Gauchos would score just three points in the third quarter. In the final stretch, the teams stayed more in stride, and the Gauchos were able to make a run of their own. UCSB carved into the USC lead with a 9-0 rally before Aaron stepped in and drained her second 3-pointer of the night. Caldwell and Aaron would score again next, moving USC along toward a final 82-39 victory over the Gauchos.
USC now turns to another nonconference clash this Saturday (Nov. 17), with Santa Clara coming to town for a 2 p.m. matchup with the Trojans.
