Undefeated USC Women Silence CSUN In The Third En Route To 58-42 Win
December 16, 2018 | Women's Basketball, Features
Trojans improve to 9-0 with a home victory over the Matadors behind five 3-pointers from Mariya Moore.
LOS ANGELES, CALIF. — The USC women's basketball team silenced visiting CSUN for the entire third quarter while the Trojans turned a two-point game into a double-digit lead en route to a final 58-42 victory over the Matadors today at Galen Center. Mariya Moore nailed five 3-pointers in the win, which kept USC's undefeated start to the season well intact, as the Trojans are now 9-0. CSUN goes to 5-7 with the loss.
The Trojans saw a once 13-point advantage melt away during the second quarter, with CSUN edging into the lead before USC crept back on top by halftime. USC would go on to outscore the Matadors 19-2 during the next 15 minutes — including that 10-minute shutout in the third frame — and sidestepped any significant CSUN push to close the gap down the stretch. By the final buzzer, USC had shot 32.8 percent from the floor while landing nine 3-pointers to help keep the Matadors at bay. CSUN went 35.4 percent from the floor by was just 1-of-14 from 3-point range. USC and CSUN wound up even on the boards 35-35, while USC nabbed 11 steals to just two from CSUN.
USC received a team-high 17 points from senior Mariya Moore, who was 5-of-8 from 3-point land. Minyon Moore and Aliyah Mazyck also hit double digits with 11 and 10 points, respectively. Minyon dished out eight assists, and Ja'Tavia Tapley led on the boards with nine. CSUN had one player hit double digits in a double-double from Channon Fluker with 22 points and 14 boards.
A back-and forth battle in the first quarter gave way to a game of significant runs in the second frame. After scoring the final four points of the first quarter to lead it 15-13, USC scored six straight points to open the second, as a Minyon Moore finish was followed by a steal from Kayla Overbeck and a putback from Ja'Tavia Tapley. Aliyah Mazyck would score her first points of the day to make it a 21-13 USC lead before CSUN broke up the 10-0 USC rally. Mazyck busted out a three next, and USC rode a 7-0 surge to a sizable 28-15 lead with 6:00 on the clock. CSUN was undeterred. The Matadors mounted a 14-0 run next, storming back and taking a 29-28 lead before USC regrouped. Shalexxus Aaron dumped in two free throws before draining a three to get USC back on top. One last CSUN bucket would wrap the half with the Trojans gripping a 33-31 advantage.
In the third, USC made its move. CSUN would come up absolutely empty on the offensive end, while that interruptive USC defense helped to fuel 10 unanswered points for the Trojan cause. USC's 33-31 lead ballooned to 43-31 entering the fourth, where the Trojans put their foot on the gas once more. CSUN scored early, only to see Mazyck drain a three before a Tapley rebound set Overbeck on the run for a fast break finish. Mariya Moore drained her fourth 3-pointer next, and a 9-0 USC rally had the Trojans up 52-33 with 5:30 to go. USC stayed the course — with Moore blasting another three and Overbeck rounding out a three-point play along the way to the 58-42 final.
USC now turns to take a trip to Texas, going up against Texas A&M at 5 p.m. CT in College Station on Wednesday (Dec. 19) before visiting UT Arlington in a 2 p.m. CT meeting on Saturday (Dec. 22). USC's conference opener comes up after the holidays, with the Trojans hosting crosstown rival UCLA at 2 p.m. on Dec. 30 at Galen Center to kick off Pac-12 play.
