USC Women Passed Up In Pac-12 Opener By UCLA
December 30, 2018 | Women's Basketball, Features
Trojans have a strong first half, but UCLA makes a second-half move to win it 72-65 at Galen Center.
LOS ANGELES, CALIF. — The USC women's basketball team was waylaid by a rough third quarter that saw the Trojans lose their first-half lead as UCLA moved ahead and held on to beat host USC 72-65 in today's Pac-12 opener at Galen Center. The Trojans were up by 11 at halftime before UCLA outscored its host 31-10 in the third to take control. The loss puts USC at 10-2 overall and 0-1 in Pac-12 play, while UCLA improves to 8-5, 1-0.
USC shot 45.2 percent from the floor in the first half to beat out UCLA's 38.3 percent as the Trojans built up a 39-28 halftime lead. By the final buzzer though, UCLA warmed up to a final 43.3 percent in the game, while the Trojans slipped to 38.7 as the second half slipped away from the hosts. UCLA also won out on the boards 49-33, but the Trojans forced 17 turnovers out of the Bruins. In the end, USC had two Trojans finish in double digits with 18 from Minyon Moore — who also had nine assists — and 14 from Mariya Moore — who dropped four 4-pointers. UCLA received a game-high 27 points from Michaela Onyenwere. Onyenwere had a double-double with 12 rebounds, as did Lajahna Drummer with 10 points and 14 rebounds. UCLA also had Kennedy Burke hit double digits with 11 points for the Bruins.
After a back-and-forth battle in the first stretch, USC manufactured a 10-0 scoring run to shove its way into the lead in the first quarter. Asiah Jones would spark the surge as she became USC's fifth scorer to make it 10-9 Trojans with 4:00 on the clock. From there, Kayla Overbeck adder her second bucket, Minyon Moore delivered back-to-back scores, and Aliyah Mazyck made good from the free-throw line to take the Trojans ahead 18-9 not three minutes later. The Bruins broke up the run with two baskets, but Moore hit the back end of her visit to the line to wrap the first with USC leading things 19-14. In the second, Ja'Tavia Tapley scored two big buckets from the paint as the teams were in stride early. UCLA was within four until Cheyanne Wallace delivered, and then Mariya Moore buried the Trojans' first 3-pointer of the day. Soon after, Mazyck followed suit, and Minyon Moore converted a three-point play that gave the Trojans an even bigger boost. She'd later nab a steal and finish at the other end, and USC would enjoy a 39-28 halftime advantage over its rivals.
In the third, UCLA pieced together a couple solid scoring rallies to maneuver into the lead. A 7-0 Bruin run was interrupted by a score from Overbeck, but USC would go into a scoring slump from the floor for four minutes while UCLA worked ahead. The Bruins got up 48-44 before Mariya Moore planted a 3-pointer to get USC within one. The Bruins would respond again, dropping three 3-pointers in the final 1:30 to build out a 59-49 lead by the end of the third. The Trojans tried to make up ground, and did so, tugging to within five after Shalexxus Aaron landed a three, Cheyanne Wallace nabbed a steal, and Minyon Moore hit the back end of her visit to the line. It was 65-60 UCLA with 4:23 to go, and the Bruins managed another 7-0 rally to put USC back behind by double figures. With 2:40 to go, Mariya Moore hit a three for the Trojan cause, but both teams came up empty the rest of the way until Aaron struck to make it 72-65 with 25 ticks to go. That would do it, and UCLA had the victory in today's Pac-12 opener.
Next up for USC is a road trip to the Bay Area. The Trojans will visit Stanford in an 8 p.m. clash on Friday (Jan. 4) before a journey to Berkeley to face Cal at 3 p.m. on Sunday (Jan. 6).
