USC Women Team Up For 78-52 Win Over Arizona
February 11, 2018 | Women's Basketball, Features
Sadie Edwards leads a set of six Trojans with double figures — five double-digit scorers and one doubling up on the boards.
LOS ANGELES, CALIF. — The USC women's basketball team finished off a sweep of the Arizona schools in following up Friday's upset win over No. 25 Arizona State with today's powerful 78-52 win over visiting Arizona. For just the second time this season, USC had five Trojans score in double digits and five land 3-pointers as the hosts put together a total team effort to lock in their 17th win of the season. This win improved USC to 17-8 overall and to 7-7 in Pac-12 play. Arizona goes to 6-19, 2-12.
Behind a 15-point first half from Sadie Edwards, who had a 4-for-4 start from 3-point land, USC shot 54.8 percent from the floor in the first half of action to outpace Arizona's 30.8 percent. The Trojans landed seven threes in those first 20 minutes, including a pair from senior Jordan Adams. That gave the captain 10 points by the break to mark her third double-digit game of the year. USC's shooting output slipped a bit in the second half, but the Trojans still overmatched the Wildcats, finishing at a 49.1 percent clip while Arizona shot 33.9 in the game. USC also won out on the boards 41-26 thanks in large part to a career-high 10 rebounds from sophomore Ja'Tavia Tapley.
USC would wrap the game with five Trojans scoring in double figures, led by Edwards' 23 points. Minyon Moore neared a triple-double in finishing with 15 points, nine assists and eight rebounds for the Trojan cause. Kristen Simon added 13 points, and Adams and Aliyah Mazyck had 10 each. Arizona was paced by Sam Thomas' 22 points with five 3-pointers landed.
Sadie Edwards was 4-for-4 from 3-point range in the first 14 minutes of action, landing two during a 10-0 Trojan rally that built out a 32-16 lead for USC. After a bucket from Kristen Simon down low, Ja'Tavia Tapley issued a block that helped spark a fast break for Minyon Moore to finish off to cap off that scoring surge for USC in the second quarter. Arizona would snap that run, but Marguerite Effa stepped up next, stuffing a Wildcat shot and then finishing in the paint at the other end. That sparked a 9-0 Trojan rally to a 41-18 advantage entering the final two minutes of the half. By the end of the second frame, USC had outscored Arizona 28-11 to grip a 47-23 advantage at the break.
In the third, Kristen Simon and Ja'Tavia Tapley both got in on the 3-point parade. Simon's blast took USC to a 52-23 lead. Four minutes later, Tapley's trey made it a 60-27 USC advantage with 3:10 left in the frame. By the end of the quarter, Tapley would work her way to a career-high 10 rebounds, as USC was up 64-33 entering the fourth. The Wildcats would make a move out of the gates of the fourth, crafting an 11-0 scoring run that got the score to 64-44 before Edwards snapped the run with a bucket that got her to 21 points on the day. In the final stretch, it was Aliyah Mazyck's turn to heat up from beyond the arc, landing her second and then later a third three to set up a USC run that included one last bucket from Edwards and a score from Marguerite Effa to help USC round out a 78-52 win over the Wildcats.
USC now turns to take its final regular-season road trip of the year with a visit to the ranked Oregon schools. The Trojans visit Oregon for a 6 p.m. matchup on Friday (Feb. 16) in Eugene before looking to claim their second win over Oregon State with a trip to Corvallis to face the Beavers at 1 p.m. on Sunday (Feb. 18).
