February 16, 2018 | Men's Tennis, Features
Trojans get the victory over the Cowboys in tonight’s Round of 16 in Seattle.
SEATTLE, WASH. — The No. 8 USC men's tennis team worked up a 4-1 win against a top-10 opponent tonight to make a move into the quarterfinal round of the ITA National Team Indoor Championships. The Trojans tangled with No. 9 Oklahoma State in the Round of 16 today in Seattle, snagging the doubles point and surrendering just one singles match while pinning up three wins to secure advancement in the elite tourney. USC is now 6-1 overall as it turns to face the top-seeded Wake Forest tomorrow (Feb. 17) in the quarterfinals.
In doubles action, the Cowboys were able to topple USC's top guns Brandon Holt and Riley Smith with a 6-2 decision on court one in favor of Oklahoma State's Cash/Hammond. USC countered that by picking up two solid wins on courts two and three, as Daniel Cukiermand and Tanner Smith sped to a 6-1 win at the No. 3 spot over Mendoza/Scaglia, and fellow Trojans Jack Jaede and Laurens Verboven manufactured a 6-2 win on court two over Dubinski/Theodorou to send USC off to singles play with a 1-0 lead on the board.
In singles, Oklahoma State was again able to pull off a win, only to see the Trojans pile up the victories that mattered to lock up the ticket to the next round. USC's #119 Logan Smith took a 6-1, 6-4 loss to Tristan Meraut on court three, but USC rolled up two straight-set wins of its own to move into a 3-1 lead. Jack Jaede delivered a 6-4, 6-4 win on court four over Oklahoma State's #55 Mathieu Scaglia, and Laurens Verboven turned a tight first set into a decisive second with a 7-6 (6), 6-3 victory over Jurence Mendoza on court five. Up 3-1, USC had a few three-setters going strong as the Trojans vied for the clincher. On court one, #11 Brandon Holt got the job done as he notched a 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 win over #88 Julian Cash to seal the deal on a 4-1 USC victory.
USC takes on the nation's top team tomorrow (Feb. 17) at 3:30 p.m. in the quarterfinals out at the ITA National Indoors. Follow along at the Tournament Central page.
