No. 15 Oregon State Pulls Off 69-63 Win Over USC Women
February 18, 2018 | Women's Basketball, Features
Trojans finish with a season split against the ranked Beavers after a tight game in Corvallis.
CORVALLIS, ORE. — The USC women's basketball team took yet another ranked team down to the wire, heaping pressure to the tune of 17 steals on No. 15 Oregon State on the Beavers' home court before late breaks got the hosts a 69-63 win over the Trojans. USC goes to 17-10 overall and to 7-9 in Pac-12 play, and Oregon State improves to 21-6, 12-4 with this week's home sweep.
USC shot just under 30 percent in the first half to trail OSU's 44 percent, but the Trojans scored 13 points off their 12 first-half steals and made a final 8-0 run to close the half, stealing back the lead for a 28-27 halftime advantage over the Beavers. OSU heated up in the third to maneuver into the lead and stay there, fending off the Trojans' late effort to close the gap and finishing out the game hitting at 47.1 percent from the floor. USC wound up at 34.3 percent, going just 3-of-19 from 3-point range to OSU's 7-of-15 outing. USC tallied 17 steals against the Beavers, led by a career-high five from Ja'Tavia Tapley. OSU won out on the board 42-34 and enjoyed a foul count in its favor, 10-17. Kristen Simon would foul out, but not before registering her 28th career double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Sadie Edwards also finished up with 16 for the Trojans, while Aliyah Mazyck added 15. Minyon Moore served up five steals, and all seven Trojans who hit the floor scored in this one. OSU was paced by 25 points from Marie Gülich, with 17 points coming from Kat Tudor and 11 from Tara Corosdale.
USC got out of the gates with a bucket and a steal and finish but then hit a cold snap that lasted over six minutes while OSU moved ahead 11-4. Minyon Moore stopped the run with a pair of free throws and a minute later after Kristen Simon finally broke USC's silence from the floor with a score down low to make it 14-8. The Beavers would build a 10-point lead in the final minute of the quarter, but Sadie Edwards earned a trip to the line in the final seconds and hit both to make it an 18-10 deficit after 10 minutes of action. In the second quarter, USC made its move, carving down that OSU lead with eight more steals to put the Beavers on notice. With 3:10 to go, OSU gripped a 25-17 lead, but a 3-pointer from Moore put some key wind back in the Trojans' sails. OSU struck back in the next minute, only to see USC interrupt the Beavers' offense with a series of takeaways that helped fuel an 8-0 USC rally in the last 2:00. Marguerite Effa sparked it, Aliyah Mazyck kept it going, and Sadie Edwards topped it all off with back-to-back scores that stole back the lead for the Trojans by the halftime buzzer, up 28-27 on their hosts.
In the third, OSU's offense warmed up significantly from the mere nine points it manufactured in the second quarter. A couple 3-pointers helped the Beavers pull even at 33-33, but USC answered back and moved ahead 37-34 after a score from Edwards. That would be the last lead the Trojans would hold, though, as the foul count tipped against USC and OSU made the most of its opportunities. After a Beaver bucket in the paint made it a one-point game, OSU went to the line and worked into the lead, up 38-37 with 7:05 on the clock. The game would lock up one more time on a successful trip to the stripe from Mazyck, only to have OSU build out a 51-46 lead by the end of the third. The fourth opened as a 3-point shootout as Moore answered an opening trey from OSU. The Beavers followed with one more, and USC followed with back-to-back scores from Mazyck and Simon to get it to 57-53 at 7:20. It would continue to be a back-and-forth battle, with USC closing the gap down to three as Marguerite Effa scored and Edwards followed with her 16th points, making it 66-63 OSU with 1:05 to go. USC's 3-point tries to equalize were just off the mark, while OSU got a back-breaking bucket to lead it 68-63 with 11 seconds left, then closed it out with one more free throw to finalize things as a 69-63 Beaver win.
The Trojans now return home to Galen Center to close out the regular season. USC will host Utah at 6 p.m. on Thursday (Feb. 22) before a Senior Day celebration for the Trojans' three seniors — Jordan Adams, Sadie Edwards and Kristen Simon — on Saturday (Feb. 24) ahead of a 1 p.m. clash with Colorado.
