Simon Drains Late OT Three To Lift USC Women To Victory Over Utah
February 22, 2018 | Women's Basketball, Features
Kristen Simon lands clutch 3-pointer and finishes with her 29th career double-double to lead the Trojans.
LOS ANGELES, CALIF. — The USC women's basketball team got a heroic overtime 3-pointer from senior post Kristen Simon to steal back the lead with just over a second to go, setting up one last defensive stop by the Trojans to beat visiting Utah 53-52 in OT at Galen Center. In a game that saw 13 lead changes and eight ties, USC managed to overcome a late deficit to notch a crucial Pac-12 victory. USC improves to 18-10 overall and to 8-9 in Pac-12 play, while Utah goes to 17-11, 8-9.
USC and Utah traded the lead seven times in the first half before the Trojans made a late move to lead it 24-20 at halftime. USC was shooting 33.3 percent from the floor to just outpace Utah's 32.1 percent, and USC had nailed a pair of threes to help hold the edge at the break. Utah would make up that ground in the second half, carving down what was a six-point USC lead and pulling even late to force overtime with the game tied 45-45. USC was shooting 32.1 percent at the end of regulation, and Utah was hitting at a 34.6 percent clip as the teams entered OT. By the final overtime buzzer — after Simon landed USC's fourth 3-pointer of the game to lift her team to the win — USC had shot 34.4 percent from the floor to Utah's 36.2 percent. The Utes won out on the boards 42-36, but committed 14 turnovers after seven USC steals.
USC was paced by senior Simon's third straight double-double. She had 10 rebounds by halftime and finished up with 16 points and 15 boards to lead the Trojans. That scoring tally pulled Simon up to rank No. 16 all-time in career scoring with 1,404 career points to date. Sadie Edwards had 13 points, and Aliyah Mazyck had 10 before fouling out late in regulation. Utah received a game-high 20 points along with 15 rebounds from Emily Potter and 12 points from Tilar Clark.
The lead changed hands three times in the first frame as teams traded short scoring spurts. Sadie Edwards drained a three and then Jordan Adams intercepted to spark a fast break finish from Kristen Simon to take USC to a 9-8 lead at 2:40. By the end of the frame, the game was locked up 11-11. As Simon worked her way to 10 first-half rebounds, the Trojans turned a 15-15 tie into a 19-15 lead. Utah responded with a 3-pointer and a take to the hoop to nudge into the lead 20-19 with 3:10 to go in the half, only to see Aliyah Mazyck drain a three to snake back the lead, and then Edwards scored in the lane in the final seconds to tack up a 24-20 USC lead at halftime.
USC would build out a six-point lead during the third, going up 34-28 on a bucket from Simon with 2:10 on the clock, but Utah managed the last seven points of the frame to sneak into the lead, up 35-34 on a buzzer-beating layup from Emily Potter to close the third. In the fourth, USC got some fuel from Mazyck, who drained another three and then followed up a charge taken by Jordan Adams with a zip to the hoop to net the Trojans a 41-38 advantage with 6:25 to go. A three-point play from Utah would come next, however, leveling things at 41-41 with 4:44 to go in regulation. Another lockup at 43-43 would come at 4:10 before Simon struck again to make it 45-43. That would be the last field goal to fall, as USC came up empty from the free-throw line, then saw Utah go 2-for-4 in the last 1:07 before a defensive board from Ja'Tavia Tapley ensured overtime with the game snarled at 45-45.
Utah took a quick 49-44 lead on back-to-back buckets in the first minute of OT. With 1:41 to go, Utah gripped a 52-48 advantage. In the final minute, Simon came up with a key rebound, and Minyon Moore delivered a jumper in the key to get it to 52-50 with 35 seconds to go. The Utes had a look as the shot clock wound down on their possession, but it fell short and USC recovered the ball on the shot clock violation with 3.5 seconds left. That set up Simon's heroics, as she took the inbounds pass from Adams and buried the 3-pointer — her 10th of the season — to tug the Trojans ahead 53-52 with just over a tick to go. USC would hold on and emerge victorious for a nail-biting comeback win.
USC now turns to host its final regular-season game this Saturday (Feb. 24), starting the action with a Senior Day celebration to honor a trio of Trojans — Jordan Adams, Sadie Edwards and Kristen Simon — along with senior manager Jason Hill. At 1 p.m., USC is set to take on Colorado in a regular-season finale at Galen Center.
