Senior Day Success! USC Women Wrap Regular Season With 65-53 Win Over Colorado
February 24, 2018 | Women's Basketball, Features
Aliyah Mazyck lands five 3-pointers to tie the program record for season threes made.
LOS ANGELES, CALIF. — The USC women's basketball team secured its 19th win of the year to put the Trojans in a strong position for an NCAA bid as USC now turns to make some noise in the coming Pac-12 Tournament. Today's 65-43 win over visiting Colorado not only made it a successful Senior Day for captains Jordan Adams, Sadie Edwards and Kristen Simon, it gets USC the No. 7 seed into the conference tourney, which opens up March 1 in Seattle. USC is now 19-10 overall and grips a 9-9 Pac-12 mark in closing out the regular season with a home sweep of Utah and Colorado. The Buffs go to 14-15, 5-13 to end the regular season.
To get to this Pac-12 victory, the Trojans had to fight back from a halftime deficit. The lead changed hands six times in the first half as Colorado grabbed the late advantage to lead it 27-25 at halftime. The Trojans landed five 3-pointers in those first 20 minutes but was colder from the rest of the court as USC went 33.3 percent from the floor in the first half to trail Colorado's 44 percent first-half effort. In the third, USC made a power move, mounting a 14-3 run that pushed the Trojans into the lead for good. By the final buzzer, USC had shot 40.4 percent from the floor while Colorado was left at 38 percent. The Trojans also won out on the boards with authority, hauling in 40 rebounds to 24 by the Buffs.
USC's offense was sparked by Aliyah Mazyck, who landed five 3-pointers to tie the USC season record, now with 85 three made so far this season. The junior finished up with a game-high 24 points and was a rebound away from a double-double with nine boards. Senior Kristen Simon would lock in with her fourth straight double-double and 30th of her career, finishing her Senior Day with 16 points and 11 rebounds. Sophomore Minyon Moore, who was sidelined with a cut above her eye for much of the first quarter, came back with a vengeance and wrapped the game with 15 points. Colorado was paced by 19 points from Kennedy Leonard.
Aliyah Mazyck accounted for all 11 of USC's first-quarter points as USC took an 11-7 lead before Minyon Moore suffered a cut above her eye and had to leave the game to be attended to. That's when Colorado manufactured a 10-0 run to end the frame and move into a 17-11 lead. USC regrouped to start the second, though, as Kristen Simon joined the scoresheet with a pair of free throws and a bucket before Mazyck sliced her way to the hoop to level the game at 17-17 with 8:25 on the clock. It turned into a 3-point shootout soon after, as the Buffs landed a pair while USC countered with threes from Candela Abejón and Jordan Adams at the other end. Moore would get back on the floor and lift USC into the lead with a take to the hoop, putting the Trojans ahead 25-23 with 1:35 left in the half. Colorado would finish out the frame with back-to-back buckets, however, taking the Buffs into the lead, up 27-25 at halftime.
In the third, USC made its move. Colorado landed a three in the midst of 14 Trojan points poured in during the first four minutes of the frame as USC crafted a 39-30 advantage. Moore and Mazyck each landed threes during that stretch, and it was a steal and finish from Mazyck that got USC that nine-point advantage. By the end of the frame, USC's lead was still intact, up 49-40 entering the fourth. The Trojans would fire off a 7-0 surge as Simon worked her way into double digits for the 28th time this season and Mazyck landed her fifth 3-pointer of the day to tie the USC season record and take USC to a 58-43 lead with 5:20 to go. The Trojans would stay the course the rest of the way, closing out a final regular-season victory on home turf to send their seniors out in style.
With a 9-9 finish in Pac-12 play, USC has the No. 7 seed for the coming Pac-12 Tournament. That should put the Trojans up against Washington State in a 6 p.m. first-round battle on March 1 at KeyArena in Seattle.
