USC Women Pick Up 20th Win With 47-44 Victory Over WSU In Pac-12 Tournament
March 01, 2018 | Women's Basketball, Features
Minyon Moore and Aliyah Mazyck combine for 30 points and nine steals for the Trojans to advance to the Pac-12 quarterfinals.
SEATTLE, WASH. — The No. 7 seeded USC women's basketball team locked up its 20th win of the season with a nail-biter in the first round of the Pac-12 Tournament in Seattle. The Trojans went up against No. 10 seed Washington State and played another tight one with the Cougars, making a 6-0 run to get into the lead during the fourth quarter after 11 lead changes in the game and then holding on for a final 47-44 win over WSU. Now 20-10 overall, the Trojans turn to face No. 2 seeded Stanford in tomorrow's quarterfinals at 6 p.m. at KeyArena.
Neither team could get in a successful scoring groove through much of the first half, but USC was able to heat up from a 2-for-15 start to wrap the half shooting 29.6 percent from the floor. WSU was a 21.7 percent, but had nailed half it 3-point tries in making three to counter the Trojans' efforts in the paint in those first 20 minutes of action. The second half saw a warm-up of sorts for both teams, although defense remained the theme in this one. USC would finish out the game going 31 percent from the floor to go with a 9-of-10 effort from the free-throw line and outrebounding the Cougars 40-32. USC also manufactured 10 steals, with Minyon Moore and Aliyah Mazyck combining for nine of those. WSU finished up at 31.4 percent from the floor, going 5-of-10 from 3-point range but 7-of-10 from the line.
USC's Moore had a game-high 16 points — including the final buzzer-beating layup to secure USC's victory — and Mazyck added 14 for the Trojans, while Kristen Simon and Jordan Adams dominated the boards to the tune of 12 and 10 rebounds, respectively. WSU was led by Nike McClure's 12 points.
It was slow going on both ends in the first half of play, with only Aliyah Mazyck able to convert from the floor for the first 13 minutes of action. She'd get USC its first lead with another take to the hoop to make it 8-7 Trojans to start the second quarter. Another Mazyck make got it even at 10-10 two minutes later, and then Kristen Simon broke through with a bucket down low to help USC find its balance. Simon, Sadie Edwards and Minyon Moore would each score as USC worked out to a 16-12 lead with 4:35 left in the half. Mazyck would have the last word of the half in netting another score to tug the Trojans ahead 18-16 at the end of the first half.
In the third, WSU jumped back into the lead early on a three-point play. The Cougars would also land 3-pointers to answer USC scores to keep edging back ahead, up 27-24 on their fifth three of the game. Minyon Moore would nail USC's first three of the game a minute later, lifting USC back ahead and then hitting Sadie Edwards for a bucket before Mazyck struck again to help build out a 33-27 USC lead with 2:20 to go in the third. Entering the fourth, USC gripped a 35-31 lead, only to see WSU fire off five straight points to open the final frame to take a 36-35 lead. USC responded with a couple Edwards free throws, a big bucket from Simon and then a Moore finish off a Simon assist to craft a 41-36 USC lead with 6:00 to go. WSU would carve that down to a one-point game in the final minute with another three-point play, making it 45-44 USC with 45 seconds left. USC would miss on its ensuing shot, but Simon hauled in the rebound to give USC another look. As time ticked down and WSU was forced to foul, Moore got the ball off a USC inbounds pass and slipped in a buzzer-beater to wrap the game as a 47-44 win.
USC now face Stanford for the third time this season, looking to upset the No. 2 seeds after falling in two tight games with the Cardinal during the regular season. USC and Stanford face off at 6 p.m. tomorrow (March 2) in the quarterfinals at KeyArena.
