USC Women Fall In Pac-12 Quarterfinals To No. 16 Stanford
March 02, 2018 | Women's Basketball, Features
Trojans go to 20-11 overall with a 69-59 loss to the Cardinal.
SEATTLE, WASH. — The No. 7 seed USC women's basketball team reeled in No. 2 seed and No. 16-ranked Stanford with a strong final three quarters of play in tonight's Pac-12 Tournament quarterfinal at KeyArena, but the Cardinal held its ground and finished off a 69-59 win over the Trojans to advance in tournament play. USC was undeterred by a slow start and kept stride with Stanford, outscoring the Cardinal 50-48 in the final 30 minutes but unable to carve down the deficit it inherited in the first frame. USC now grips a 20-11 overall record, with two wins over ranked opponents and no losses to opponents outside the top-41 in the latest RPI standings. Stanford improves to 21-9 with tonight's win over the Trojans.
USC outrebounded Stanford 36-35 and forced 12 Cardinal turnovers, but was hurt by a tough shooting night. USC shot 26.8 percent in the game, while Stanford shot 42.6 percent. USC received a game-high 22 points from Aliyah Mazyck, and a game-high 12 rebounds from Kristen Simon. Minyon Moore and Jordan Adams also high double figures with 12 and 10 points, respectively. Stanford had four players score in double digits, with 18 from Kiana Williams, 14 from Alanna Smith, 13 from DiJonai Carrington and 10 from Marta Sniezek.
USC had to overcome a stubborn rim on its offensive end, with shot caroming in and out of the hoop while the Trojans hit a scoring skid in the first quarter. After Minyon Moore answered an opening three from Stanford with a take to the hoop, USC was only able to land a couple free throws from Kristen Simon in the next stretch. With 1:35 left in the frame, Sadie Edwards lofted in a bucket in the paint to break USC's silence, but Stanford had been far more effective on the other end, leading it 18-6 after Edwards' breakthrough basket. USC would get a series of free throws to fall in the remaining stretch, but Stanford got a buzzer-beating 3-pointer to go from half court to end the frame up 21-9 on the Trojans.
Although the foul count tipped heavily against USC in the next trench, with eight fouls whistled against the Trojans, USC was able to generate some offense of its own. For the first six minutes, Stanford landed just one basket from the floor while USC heated up and carved the deficit down to 28-18 thanks to back-to-back scores from Aliyah Mazyck. Moore would hit Jordan Adams for a score underneath, then Adams took a charge that got USC back on the attack. Edwards finished that possession, and the margin was at single digits at 32-24 with 1:15 left. Stanford would get yet another visit to the line to end the half, nailing both to hold a 34-24 halftime advantage.
USC would carve down the deficit to seven when Mazyck followed a pair of Adams free throws with a bucket to make it 37-30 with 6:25 on the clock in the third. Mazyck wouldn't go away, landing her 86th three of the year to set a new USC single-season record to keep the deficit in single digits minute later. Stanford would not let the Trojans sneak much closer, however, landing yet another buzzer-beating 3-pointer to end the frame, taking a 52-39 lead into the fourth. USC pressed on, getting as close as six points away at 59-53 with a successful trip to the line from Moore with 6:15 to go. Yet again, Stanford responded, finishing off a three-point play and then netting two free throws to pad back the lead. USC do its best to play catchup the rest of the way, but Stanford fended off the Trojans to finish out a 69-59 decision to snake that spot in tomorrow's semifinals.
USC now awaits the NCAA bracket reveal on March 12 to see if the Trojans' impressive resume scores USC a spot in the 2018 tournament for the first time since 2014.
