Trojans put six swimmers in A finals on third night of championships.
Sophomore Louise Hansson successfully defended her conference crown in the 100y fly while junior Riley Scott won her first title in the 100y breast to highlight a big night for USC on the third night of the Pac-12 Swimming and Diving Championships on Friday (Feb. 23) in Federal Way, Wash.
The Trojans finished the third day with 547.5 points, in fifth.
Hansson broke her school record (which she earlier equaled with a top-seed prelim swim of 50.39) with a 50.17 to win her second straight 100y fly Pac-12 title, breaking Janet Hu's Pac-12 meet record (50.38) and just 0.16 off Natalie Coughlin's conference standard (50.01) set in 2002.
The Swedish native, who hit the wall almost a second ahead of Stanford second-place finisher Ally Howe (51.03), led three Trojans in the A final as sophomore Catherine Sanchez tied for sixth in a PR 52.24 while junior Maddie Wright was eighth in 52.56. It was her second straight final in the race.
Hansson's win is USC's fifth in the race and she's the first Pac-12 swimmer to win it back-to-back since Stanford's Elaine Breeden (2009-10).
Scott won the Trojans' sixth 100y breast title when she powered home in 58.81, hitting the wall 0.23 ahead of ASU's Silja Kanasakoski and 0.26 better than Stanford's Kim Williams. USC freshman Maggie Aroesty came in next, posting a PR 59.35 for fourth.
Scott's title tonight was her second after winning the 200y breast last year. She will get a chance to defend that title Saturday night.
Senior Hannah Weiss had a strong night, reaching her third 100y back final and taking fifth in 51.91. She posted a 51.81 in prelims (just 0.21 off her school record) and the pair of swims are her fastest in the race since her freshman year.
USC was disqualified in the 400y medley relay after an early takeoff on one of the legs.
Junior Lily Dubroff clocked a PR 52.87 to take 3rd in the 100y fly B final (11th overall), her best ever Pac-12 finish, while freshman Caitlin Tycz finished 12th (53.06). Sophomore Abby Miller finished 19th overall with a third in the 100y back C final (54.83, PR).
Sophomore Tatum Wade (1:45.50) and senior Lexie Malazdrewicz (1:45.58) finished second and third, respectively, in the 200y free B final while sophomore Becca Mann (4:16.88) and junior Elizabeth Stinson (4:21.99) scored in the C heat.
Junior Madi Witt led USC on 3-meter in 10th with 267.40 points. Sophomore Naomi Gowlett was 13th (258.35) and junior Tabby Krebs was 17th (239.45).
The meet closes Saturday with prelims at 11 a.m. and finals at 6 p.m.
