Trojans take a 4-2 loss in Westwood.
WESTWOOD, CALIF. — The No. 9 USC men's tennis team took a trip across town today to take on No. 4 UCLA in a nonconference rivalry clash at Los Angeles Tennis Center. After the doubles point slipped into Bruin hands, USC got a couple singles wins from Laurens Verboven and Daniel Cukierman to get the Trojans within one, but UCLA got the clincher in a three-setter on court four to notch the win over the visiting Trojans. USC is now 7-3 overall on the year.
The Bruins made the first move with a 6-0 win on court two in doubles, but the remaining matches tightened up significantly. While USC's top guns, #25 Brandon Holt and Riley Smith were tangled up with UCLA's #37 Redlicki/Zhu on court one, UCLA's Cressy/Pereira worked out ahead of Trojans Daniel Cukierman and Tanner Smith late, handing the USC pair their first loss of the year while snagging the doubles point for the Bruins with a 7-5 win. That suspended action on court one and brought up singles action in Westwood.
UCLA would jump ahead 2-0 on a 6-4, 6-3 win from Connor Hance over USC's Jake DeVine on court six, but USC countered when Laurens Verboven came through with a straight-set upset over UCLA's #60 Logan Staggs, winning on court four 7-5, 6-3 to make it 2-1. Again UCLA responded, this time on #72 Keegan Smith's 7-5, 6-4 victory over USC's Logan Smith, and it was back to a 3-1 UCLA advantage. At the No. 2 spot, USC's #68 Daniel Cukierman got the wind back in USC's sails in topping #102 Evan Zhu 6-2, 7-5 to make it 3-2 with two three-setters raging on courts one and five. At the No. 5 slot, it would be UCLA's Maxime Cressy who hit the finish line first to clinch it, holding off USC's #112 Jack Jaede with a 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 decision that made it a 4-2 UCLA win. On court one, a fierce battle between top-10 opponents came to a close with USC's #8 Brandon Holt just a step ahead of UCLA's #3 Martin Redlicki after trading sets, up 5-4 in the third when the match was decided.
The Trojans now get ready to head to La Jolla later this week, up against No. 28 San Diego in a 12 p.m. match on Thursday (March 1) at La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club. The next day, USC will get to doubles action with competition at the Pacific Coast Doubles Championships at the same venue.
