Justin Suh Wins Amer Ari Invitational For Third Victory Of Season
February 03, 2018 | Men's Golf, Features
Freshman Kaito Onishi ties for third, Trojans take third overall.
Justin Suh's hot streak continues into the spring season as the nation's No. 1 player fired a final-round 68 to come-from-behind and win the Amer Ari Invitational at the Waikoloa Kings' Course in Waikoloa, Hawaii, on Saturday (Feb. 3), leading No 15 USC in its third-place finish.
The Trojans, in their spring season opener, closed with a final round 9-under 279, finishing at 27-under 837 (282-276-279). Oklahoma State won the event at 47-under 817 while Texas Tech was second at 30-under 834.
Suh won for the third time this season and for the second time in a row at 13-under 203 (69-66-68), edging Oklahoma State's Matthew Wolff (12-under 204) thanks to four birdies over the final six holes, including on 17 and 18. Suh also had an eagle on 4.
Suh has now posted seven straight rounds under 70 and has been in the 60s 12 times in 15 rounds this season, finishing above par only once this season.
Suh now has 11 straight top 20 finishes dating back to last season, nine of which have been inside the top 9 and 10 in the top 11.
Freshman Kaito Onishi did his best to match Suh, tying for third at 11-under 205 (69-67-69) and registering his fifth straight round under 70. It was his second straight top 3 finish.
Sophomore Cheng Jin tied for 37th at 2-under 214 (70-74-70) with six final-round birdies and Kyle Suppa, from Hawaii, tied for 47th at par 216 (75-69-72). Junior Sam Kim, playing individually, tied for 59th at 2-over 218 (75-69-74) while freshman Issei Tanabe tied for 94th at 11-over 227 (74-74-79).
"Justin had another great week," USC Coach Chris Zambri said. "He continues to show that he is a world class player. He birdies four of the last six holes. Big time stuff.
"Kaito is emerging as major contributor to our team's success. He will continue to learn and get even better as his talent level is quite high.
"Overall, we got beat pretty badly by a great team in Oklahoma State. Our goal now is to get better and try to close the gap between them and us."
