USC Women Serve Up Solid 77-62 Upset Win Over No. 25 Sun Devils
February 09, 2018 | Women's Basketball, Features
Trojans net an important Pac-12 win behind four players in double figures at Galen Center.
LOS ANGELES, CALIF. — The USC women's basketball team turned the tide on No. 25 Arizona State, recovering from a first-quarter deficit to take the lead in the second and press on to a key 77-62 upset win over the Sun Devils at Galen Center. Four Trojans hit double figures in the win, including a second straight double-double from Minyon Moore and a powerful inside-outside presence from Aliyah Mazyck (24 points) and Kristen Simon (22 points) to improve USC's overall record to 16-8 and 6-7 in Pac-12 play. ASU goes to 17-8, 8-5 with tonight's loss to the Trojans.
USC had to dig out of an eight-point hole in the first frame, building out a 10-point advantage during the second quarter once shots started falling for the Trojans. Up 30-25 at halftime, USC shot 41.4 percent in the first half. That was behind ASU's 42.9 percent, but USC had help from a pair of first-half 3-pointers landed by Aliyah Mazyck, opening up an inside-outside game for the Trojans. Kristen Simon had served up 12 points in the first half to lead all scorers and help anchor that Trojan move into the lead. ASU would threaten on a few occasions, but USC had an answer every time. By the final buzzer, USC gripped its largest lead of the game, having shot 50.9 percent from the floor thanks to a 9-of-18 outing from 3-point range. ASU wasn't far behind overall, going 49.1 percent from the floor, but committed 16 turnovers. ASU outrebounded USC 33-23.
USC's offensive output was well-balanced. With Mazyck and Sadie Edwards striking from long range — hitting a combined seven 3-pointers — Simon was free to run the paint. She'd finish with 22 points, just behind Mazyck's game-high 24. Edwards finished up with 11 points, while Minyon Moore delivered her second straight double-double in hitting 11 points and adding 10 assists. ASU received 17 points from Courtney Elmark, who was 5-of-6 from 3-point land in the second half, and 12 points from Charnea Johnson-Chapman.
Arizona State opened up an 8-0 lead as USC had a silent start to the game, coming up empty for the first 5:31 before Aliyah Mazyck landed a 3-pointer to get USC on the board. Mazyck would provide the equalizer for the Trojans in the second quarter on her second three, knotting it up at 14-14 with 8:45 on the clock in the second. She'd pick off a pass next, then get back the feed from Minyon Moore to get the go-ahead bucket for the Trojans on a runner that made it 16-14 USC at 7:50. Minutes later, Mazyck would hit double figures as USC created a little space on the Sun Devils. USC crafted a 6-0 run with help from back-to-back buckets from Kristen Simon, getting ahead 24-16 on that rally. USC would get out to a 10-point advantage with 2:15 left in the half, only to see ASU score the last five points to leave it as a 30-25 USC lead at the break.
ASU got its feel back from beyond the arc in the third, landing one early to get it to a two-point margin. Another one would make the score 40-35 USC with 6:45 on the clock, only to see USC get a nifty spin move to the hoop from Moore and a third 3-pointer from Mazyck to craft a 10-point lead once again, up 45-35 at 5:40. But threes kept coming from ASU, who had Courtney Ekmark go 4-for-4 from 3-point range in the third, carving the score to 48-45 Trojans on her fourth with 3:10 to go. Jordan Adams would land one of her own in the final minute for USC, and the Trojans gripped a 53-48 lead entering the fourth. That's where it was USC senior Sadie Edwards' turn to heat up from 3-point land. She went 3-for-3 in under seven minutes to help lift USC to a 62-55 advantage with 3:30 on the clock. After an Edwards block forced an ASU shot clock violation, Moore hit Edwards for a three that was followed by a three-point play from Simon a minute later, ballooning the Trojans to a 68-55 lead with 1:35 to go. Mazyck would have the final word for USC, landing one final 3-pointer to beat the shot clock and make it a 77-62 USC victory.
USC now turns to host Arizona in a 1 p.m. Pac-12 matchup on Sunday (Feb. 11) at Galen Center.
