No. 4 Buckeyes Battle Back To Beat No. 11 USC 4-3 Under The Lights At Marks Stadium
March 13, 2018 | Men's Tennis, Features
After a rain delay, Ohio State won two three-setters to move ahead of the Trojans.
LOS ANGELES, CALIF. — The No. 11 USC men's tennis team had the upper hand in a ran-delayed match at Marks Stadium, but it was No. 4 Ohio State who made the late move under the lights at Marks Stadium to claim a 4-3 comeback victory over the host Trojans. USC claimed a tight doubles point and would work out to a 3-1 lead in singles before the Buckeyes pulled off the final three matches going, including two three-setters to clinch the win. USC goes to 10-4 overall with the loss.
Doubles play was a battle as all three courts stayed in stride. On court two, USC's #52 Jack Jaede and Laurens Verboven snagged a 6-4 win over Ohio State's Mendez/Tubert, only to see the Buckeyes level things seconds later as McNally/Torpegaard topped USC's Daniel Cukierman and Tanner Smith 6-4. That left it up to court one to decide the early advantage in the match, Ohio State's #7 Joyce/Wolf had edged ahead 5-4, but USC's top guns, #26 Brandon Holt and Riley Smith, were far from done. The Trojan duo worked back out ahead 6-5 and had Holt hold it down from the service line to collect a 7-5 win and the doubles point for the Trojan cause.
USC's #64 Daniel Cukierman was a man on a mission in singles on court two, ripping his way to the first 11 games of the match before his Ohio State opponent, #41 JJ Wolf, was able to get on the board. Cukierman would surrender a string of games before locking up a 2-0 lead for the Trojans on the freshman's 6-0, 6-3 win. Not long after, Ohio State answered back, breaking onto the scoreboard with Martin Joyce's 6-2, 6-2 win over USC's Riley Smith on court four. That's when Jake DeVine stepped up on court six, securing a 3-1 USC advantage by winning the last three games of his second set against Alex Kolbelt for a 6-3, 6-4 win in the Trojans' column.
Up at the top spot, USC's #12 Brandon Holt saw his strong start against Ohio State's #2 Mikael Torpegaard slip away, and although the Trojan sophomore carved down his deficit, it was the Buckeye senior who got the win on a 7-5, 6-3 decision that made it 3-2 Trojans. That left two three-setters raging, as USC's Laurens Verboven and Jack Jaede had each recovered from a first-set loss to win the second and force a decisive third. On court five, Jaede would fall behind in his third set before getting it to 5-3, only to see Ohio State's Kyle Seelig stave off the comeback and notch a 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 win that leveled the match at 3-3. On court three, Verboven got up a break at 4-3, but Ohio State's #65 John McNally pulled things back on serve next and worked his way out of reach to win it 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 and clinch the Buckeye victory at 4-3.
USC stays home for another top-10 showdown at Marks Stadium, hosting No. 10 Texas at 2 p.m. tomorrow (March 14). From there, the Trojans will head to face No. 1 Wake Forest for a Sunday (March 18) contest in Winston-Salem, N.C.
