No. 3 USC Pins Up 17-4 Win Over No. 15 Princeton
March 22, 2018 | Women's Water Polo, Features
Maud Megens delivered a game-high four goals to help the Trojans tally a balanced win and improve to 14-1 overall on the year.
LOS ANGELES, CALIF. — The No. 3 USC women's water polo team poured out 17 goals in home waters to beat visiting No. 15 Princeton under the lights at Uytengsu Aquatics Center. Eight different Trojans scored and three USC goalies capped up in the cage to round out a powerful 17-4 win over the Tigers, led by four goals from Maud Megens and eight first-half saves from Amanda Longan. The Trojan defense allowed just one Tiger goal in the second half while adding to its 11-3 halftime advantage at the other end to keep USC plugging along to victory and improving to 14-1 overall on the year.
USC opened up an early 2-0 lead on a blast from Maud Megens and then an assist from Megens to Brianna Daboub for a fine finish. Princeton broke through on a power play next, but the Trojans fired back with a rifle shot from Paige Hauschild. The freshman followed that with a hammer of a pass from Annika Jensen, and USC gripped a 4-1 lead by the close of the first. The Trojan offense found a groove in the next stretch after Denise Mammolito opened the frame by issuing a field block against a Princeton power play. She'd deliver back-to-back blasts on the offensive end next, carrying USC ahead 6-1. The Tigers managed back-to-back scores of their own in the next minute, but the Trojans dug back in and would allow no Princeton goals for the next 19 minutes while rattling off an 11-0 scoring surge.
USC finished off the first half with five goals from five different Trojans, sparked by a savvy score out of set from Courtney Fahey. Hauschild knocked in her third next, faking and firing to tug the Trojans to an 8-3 lead. A minute later, freshman Verica Bakoc set up her senior captain Daboub for a backhand rip out of set to go to 9-3, while Megens nailed a lob and Kelsey McIntosh went bar-in to round out USC's 11-3 halftime lead. That wrapped junior goalie Amanda Longan's time in the cage with eight saves, giving way to senior Victória Chamorro for the next stretch. Princeton would be unable to score during Chamorro's time in the cage, while USC had Megens complete her four-goal night and both Hauschild and Daboub round out their hat tricks on the day. Bakoc would get on the scoresheet with a skipper that made it 14-3, taking a 6-on-5 pass from fellow freshman Randi Reinhardt to add to USC's lead, which held to the end of the third. In the fourth, freshman Nina Ceklic struck her first goal to follow blasts from Megens and Daboub, and USC was up 17-3 with 3:24 to go. Senior goalie Nicola Gonzales took over the cage for the final two minutes, giving up just a single goal to help the Trojans lock up a 17-4 final win of Princeton.
USC now heads to Tempe to take on No. 6 Arizona State for the Trojans' first MPSF game of the year, facing the Sun Devils at 1 p.m. on Saturday (March 24). USC will head straight back to Los Angeles from there to set up for a 1 p.m. matchup against Pacific on Sunday (March 25) back at Uytengsu Aquatics Center.
