USC's 200y medley relay won its first NCAA title in the race with one of the fastest times ever while junior Carsten Vissering, one quarter of the winning relay, led four Trojan individual A finalists on a point-rich evening at the NCAA Men's Swimming and Diving Championships on Friday night (March 23) in Minneapolis.
The Trojans, on the heels of the huge win, finished the third day in sixth place with 181 points in a crowded leaderboard. Indiana took the Day 3 lead (325) and is followed in the top 10 by Texas (306), California (291.5), North Carolina State (252), Florida (246), USC, Stanford (165), Louisville (118.5), Michigan (101.5) and Georgia (98).
USC's relay of freshman Robert Glinta, Vissering and seniors Dylan Carter and Santo Condorelli won in a school-record 1:21.82, holding off a charging Cal team that finished 0.06 behind while Florida and sprint star Caleb Dressel touched third, 0.51 back. Only Cal's 2017 win in 1:21.54 has gone faster at NCAAs.
The title is USC's first since the NCAA instituted the race in 1989 and its first in a medley relay win since the Trojans won the 400 in 1976. Troy last won any relay in 2015 when Carter and Condorelli helped USC win the 400y free relay and Carter helped USC's 800y free relay to first.
"They wanted to win that relay. To get a shot tonight, against a really good Cal team, that's awesome," USC Coach Dave Salo said. "We always thought our medley relays were going to be strong. We had all the elements. They wanted it last night and didn't get it, so they set their sights on this."
USC earned the top seed out of prelims with a then-school record 1:22.76. In the final, Glinta opened with a 21.15, putting USC sixth. Vissering then exploded with the fastest-ever 50y breast split, a 22.58 that gave USC a 0.13 lead. Carter followed with a 19.60 fly leg that extended the lead to 0.30, which was enough for Condorelli to bring it home in 18.49.
"It's been a goal of ours the entire season and to come together like this was exciting," said Condorelli. "Last night was a bit disappointing to come up short (in the 400y medley relay) but we redeemed ourselves."
Added Vissering: "This race was the one I was looking forward to more than anything. I was freaking out after seeing the one in prelims. I had to dial it in and remind myself just to stay within myself."
Earlier, Vissering repeated as a third-place finisher in the 100y breast in 51.28, lowering his school record by 0.12 in the process. Vissering, who qualified for the final with a 51.87 for third in prelims, is USC's first repeat All-American in the race since Ryosuke Imai 2000-01.
Glinta swam in his first career NCAA final, joined by Estonian senior Ralf Tribuntsov in his fourth 100y back A heat in a row, and the duo finished fifth (45.10) and eighth (45.34), respectively. The duo was part of a three-way tie for first at the Pac-12s at 45.32.
Glinta came in as the top seed after a PR 44.99 to solidify himself as the second-fastest Trojan ever in the race while Tribuntsov qualified with a 45.03. They are the first Trojan duo in the event's A final since USC had three in 1979.
Tribuntsov's fourth 100y back final in a row is a USC first since Trojan great John Naber won the race four straight years between 1974-77.
Carter repeated as a 200y free A finalist thanks to a prelim 1:32.30, good for the third seed overall. He finished seventh in the final in 1:32.68.
Condorelli got USC started by breaking the school record in the 100y fly and setting a PR with a 45.12 to take second in the B final. It was his second PR of the day after qualifying 10th in the morning in 45.34. He was also 10th as a 2015 sophomore.
Senior Dashiell Enos earned his second straight trip to the 3-meter B final after finishing 15th in prelims with 375.00 points. He went one point better in the B final, finishing seventh, 15th overall. Sophomore Henry Fusaro just missed a B slot, finishing 18th with 373.70 while senior Dylan Marin was 35th (318.05).
Junior Patrick Mulcare almost joined the scoring party in prelims, putting down a PR in the 100y back in 46.09 for 20th, 0.16 out of 16th.
