Mulcare takes third for second year in a row in 200 back.
Junior Patrick Mulcare finished third in the 200y back, seniors Dashiell Enos (platform) and Santo Condorelli (100y free) each took eighth in their respective final events and USC's 400y free relay finished fifth as the Trojans wrapped up the final night of the 2018 NCAA Men's Swimming and Diving Championships in sixth on Saturday (March 24) in Minneapolis.
The Trojans' sixth-place finish was their second in a row and they posted their seventh top eight result at the NCAAs in the last eight years.
Texas won the team title with 449 points, edging Cal (437.5) for its fourth team title in a row. Indiana was third (422) and followed in the top 10 by North Carolina State (385), Florida (347), USC (253), Stanford (205), Michigan (168.5), Louisville (156) and Georgia (129).
"Overall it was a really good performance from the team. They really performed for each other," USC Coach Dave Salo said. "They rose up to expectations on the relays. There were a few swims that might have been individually disappointing, but they put them behind them and really did great on the relays.
"Winning a title at NCAAs is not easy so to come away with one at the women last week (Louise Hansson, 100y fly) and to get a relay this week was really special. I'm really proud of the guys."
USC closed the the big meet as the 400y free relay of Condorelli and fellow seniors Dylan Carter and Ralf Tribuntsov joined freshman Robert Glinta finished fifth in a near-school record 2:47.13, just 0.07 off the school standard. It was USC's fourth A final relay of the meet.
The quartet qualified for the final after a then-season-best in prelims of 2:48.19 to earn the sixth seed.
Mulcare became the first Trojan to swim in three straight 200y back A finals since Jim Wells (1993-95) and posted his second straight third-place finish with a 1:38.43, the second-fastest time in school history behind his school record 1:37.80.
Mulcare was fifth after 50 yards and fourth after the 100 at 47.99. He was third with 50 to go and held the spot into the wall. He claimed his A final lane with a 1:38.85 in prelims.
Enos earned a return ticket to the platform A final with a 386.95, good for seventh in prelims. He finished eighth in the final with 373.20. He is the first Trojan to make back-to-back platform A finals since Ray Vincent (2004-05).
Condorelli had to battle a gauntlet of blazing 100y free swims to earn the fifth seed in the final – his second A final in a row – with a PR 41.69. He finished eighth in the final in 42.34.
Carter posted a pair of season-best swims en route to 11th in the 100y free, taking third in the B final in 41.93. He qualified for the second swim after finishing 12th overall in prelims with a 41.98, which shaved 0.76 off his seed time. It was Carter's third scoring swim in the NCAA race.
