USC defeats Cal, 3-1-1, after finishing first in stroke play.
After a dominating performance in 18 holes of stroke play, the No. 7 USC women's golf team defeated Pac-12 rival California, 3-1-1, in the SDSU March Mayhem championship bracket quarterfinals on Monday (March 25) at the Farms G.C. in Rancho Santa Fe, Calif.

USC earned the top seed in the championships bracket after finishing first in the opening round of stroke play at 6-under 282, 15 shots better than second-place Texas, setting up a match with Cal, which took the eight-seed at 16-over 304.

The Trojans, the two-time defending champions of the event, then took care of the Bears, 3-1-1, to advance to the semifinals.

Freshman Jennifer Chang defeated Cal's Marianne Li, 5&3, while sophomore Allisen Corpuz downed Bear Maria Herraez Galvez, 4&3. Freshman Amelia Garvey clinched the win for USC by defeating Amina Wolf, 1up. Freshman Alyaa Abdulghany was square through 17 when play stopped. Freshman Gabi Ruffels fell, 6&4, to Jiyoon Jang.

Corpuz fired a collegiate best 4-under 68 to earn medalist honors to open play and her freshmen teammates finished close behind.

Garvey turned in her best effort in her fourth Trojan round to tied with Abdulghany at 1-under 71. Ruffels' 72 was also her best at USC while Chang finished at 2-over 74.
