Behind wins by sophomore Allisen Corpuz and freshmen Gabi Ruffels and Amelia Garvey, the No. 7 USC women's golf team defeated Northwestern, 3-2, on Tuesday (March 27), and advanced to the championship match of the 2018 SDSU March Mayhem at the Farms G.C. in Rancho Santa Fe, Calif.

USC, the two-time defending champion of the event and a four-time winner overall in the tournament's five-year run, played the Wildcats for the third time in less than year after losing to them in the 2018 NCAA semifinals in May and defeating them in the East Lake Cup semifinals on Oct. 31.
Â
In the latest matchup, USC saw Ruffels defeat Northwestern's Brooke Riley, 6&5, while Corpuz downed Janet Mao, 5&3. Garvey had to come from behind to win the Trojans' decisive point, erasing a three-hole deficit to defeat Sarah Cho, 1up.
Â
Neither Ruffels nor Corpuz trailed in their matches. Ruffels only lost two holes, Corpuz just one. Garvey, after squaring the match four holes left, fell behind a hole with three left. She squared with a birdie on the third to last hole, took the lead with a par on the ensuing hole and used another par to clinch the win.
Â
Freshman Jennifer Chang fell 1up to Northwestern's Hannah Kim while sophomore Alyaa Abdulghany lost 3&2 to Stephanie Lau.
Â
USC is now 4-0 in match play action this year with two wins over Northwestern, one over Stanford and another over California.
Â
The Trojans will face Texas, a 4-1 winner over Iowa State, in the final at 8:30 a.m. Wednesday.
