April 15, 2018 | Men's Tennis, Features
Trojans make it a Pac-12 road sweep with another win in Arizona.
TEMPE, ARIZ. — The No. 16 USC men's tennis team cleaned up a Pac-12 road sweep with a 4-1 victory over No. 33 Arizona State today in Tempe. The Trojans fired off the opening point with a couple doubles wins before ASU snagged its first point of the match in singles. USC would rattle off the next three singles wins, capped by Jake DeVine's clincher, to close out the victory and improve the Trojans' overall record to 14-7 to go with a 5-2 mark in Pac-12 action.
In doubles, USC's trusty top-two pairs closed out the first point of the day. The #10 duo of Brandon Holt and Riley Smith took out ASU's Geerts/Ruehl with a 6-2 victory at the top spot just moment before #12 Jack Jaede and Laurens Verboven locked down a 6-3 win over Bolla/Rakotomalala on court two to secure the 1-0 lead for the Trojans. That suspended the court three matchup between USC's Jake DeVine and Tanner Smith and ASU's Hannestad/Kirkman, with the Sun Devils in the lead 5-2.
In singles action, the Sun Devils would equalize as #72 Benjamin Hannestad held his ground against USC's #84 Daniel Cukierman for a 6-4, 6-4 decision that snarled it at 1-1. The Trojans would respond with the go-ahead win from Laurens Verboven on court two. The junior's 7-5, 6-4 victory over Tim Ruehl got USC ahead 2-1 in the match, and then Riley Smith padded out the Trojan lead with a 7-5, 6-3 win over Andrea Bolla at the No. 5 spot. Up 3-1 in the match, USC had just one win to tally to secure victory. That would come from court six, where USC's Jake DeVine had stolen the first set on a tiebreaker and then rolled on through to the clincher with a 7-6 (5), 6-3 decision over Will Kirkman to round out the 4-1 USC win.
The Trojans have their final regular-season match on tap next weekend, as USC hosts Utah in a noon showdown on Saturday (April 21) at Marks Stadium.
