Trojans finish Pac-12 play 6-2 overall to take the No. 3 seed into next week’s Pac-12 Tournament.
LOS ANGELES, CALIF. — The No. 13 USC men's tennis team issued a 4-0 decision over visiting No. 38 Utah in the Pac-12 regular-season finale at Marks Stadium today. The Trojans snagged the doubles point with a win from Brandon Holt and Riley Smith on court one and later received a tiebreaker victory from Jack Jaede and Laurens Verboven on court two. That kept both Trojan tandems perfect in Pac-12 doubles play, sitting at 7-0 apiece in conference competition. Next, USC rattled off three straight-set wins at the top of the ladder to secure the home win. USC improves to 15-7 overall and 6-2 in Pac-12 play to lock up the No. 3 seed into the coming Pac-12 Tournament.
It was Senior Day at USC, and the Trojans took time to honor their three graduating seniors — Thibault Forget, Henry Ji and Jens Sweaney — in between doubles and singles play.
After USC's top guns Brandon Holt and Riley Smith whipped up a speedy 6-0 victory on court one, the doubles point tightened up with close matches brewing on courts two and three. At the No. 3 spot, the Utes had Micevski/Sierra fend off USC's Tanner Smith and Mateusz Smolicki with a 6-4 decision that snarled up the doubles battle. On court two, USC had #11 Jack Jaede and Laurens Verboven grind out the decider with a powerful push in a tiebreaker to beat Utah's Benkaim/Cory 7-6 (2) and tack up the 1-0 lead for the Trojans.
In singles, it was doubles partners Jaede and Verboven who kept their winning touch the hottest, as Jaede peeled out to the first win on a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Utah's Egbert Weverink on court two to make it 2-0. At the No. 3 spot, Verboven hit the finish line next on a 6-1, 6-4 win over Santiago Sierra, and USC was up 3-0. That set the table for Brandon Holt on court one, as the sophomore sped to a 6-4, 6-1 clinching victory over David Micevski to lock down the 4-0 sweep for the Trojans.
USC now turns to Pac-12 Tournament play, opening with a quarterfinal match on April 26 to fight for a spot in the April 27 semis and on to the April 28 title match in Ojai. The Trojans enter the tourney as defending champions after their run to the 2017 title.
