Trojans Take Series With 8-4 Win at ASU
April 08, 2018 | Baseball, Features
USC took each of the last two games after dropping the opener in Phoenix, moving to 16-12 overall and 5-7 in Pac-12 play courtesy of Sunday's win. The Sun Devils fall to 14-18 overall and 6-6 in conference play
The Trojans got a one-out triple from Brandon Perez to get things going in the first and then he was brought home by a Lars Nootbaar single. Dillon Paulson hit an RBI ground-rule double in the third and then it was again Nootbaar with a sacrifice fly in the fifth to make it a 3-1 USC lead. Nootbaar's RBI in the fifth answered a solo-homer by ASU's Carter Aldrete in the bottom of the fourth.
The Sun Devils got another solo-homer from Gage Workman in the seventh, but it was sandwiched in between a two-run sixth inning and three-run eighth for USC. Blake Sabol squeezed home a run in the sixth and Ben Ramirez had RBI singles in each inning as part of a three-hit day for the freshman. Chase Bushor capped the scoring in the eighth with an high-bouncing single down the third-base line to score two runs.
Spencer Torkelson would hit another solo-shot in the bottom of the eighth and ASU got an RBI groundout to make it 8-4, but Sabol would throw a runner out trying to take third on a ball four in the dirt to end the inning.
TOP PERFORMERS
- Perez went 3-for-5 with two runs scored and a triple.
- Nootbaar drove in two runs, walked twice and was 1-for-2 at the plate.
