USC Women's Rowing Completes First Day at NCAA Rowing Championships
May 25, 2018 | Women's Rowing, Features
The No. 13 ranked USC women's rowing team completed its first day of competition at the 2018 NCAA Championships at Nathan Benderson Park in Sarasota, Fla. on Friday, May 25. The Trojan Varsity Eight advanced to tomorrow's I Eights A/B Semifinals, while the Varsity Four and Second Varsity Eight boats will each compete in their respective C/D Semifinals.
"It's been a long day of racing here at Nathan Benderson Park," said head coach Josh Adam. "Every boat rowed hard in the heats this morning, and we were proud of everyone's race. Then, it was a great exercise in energy management while we waited for the repechage. Reps are always exciting as every crew is racing for the opportunity to make the best semi possible. The 1V8 had a great race holding off Brown and Indiana. The 2V8 raced with amazing grit and confidence to fight with Princeton and Brown all the way down the course. The 1V4 has been dialing in their best races here. This semi is going to be another opportunity to show just how much faster they have become."

In the first heat of the day, the Varsity Eight was locked in a tight battle with Iowa to secure that No. 2 finish so they could automatically advance into tomorrow's A/B Semifinal. They remained overlapped with the Hawkeyes throughout the race, but Iowa pulled ahead at the end, and the Trojans placed third with a time of 6:31.152 behind Stanford (6:22.739) and Iowa (6:26.997).
In the repechage, Brown had the best start and took a quick lead. The Trojans remained consistent throughout the race and advanced past Brown. The remainder of the race was a battle against Indiana for the No. 1 spot. In the end, USC placed first in an extremely tight finish with a time of 6:13.374, just barely ahead of Indiana who had a time of 6:13.429. This first place finish secured the Women of Troy a spot in tomorrow's A/B Semifinal.
The Second Varsity Eight was neck and neck with Iowa in their morning heat as Washington had created space between the other boats. Similarly to the Varsity Eight, the 2V8 continued to battle against the Hawkeye opponents until the end. USC placed third with a 6:38.269 time behind Washington (6:24.756) and Iowa (6:36.964).
The 2V8 repechage was another close race between Princeton, Brown and USC. In the end, USC would claim third with a final time of 6:21.275, just two seconds behind first place Princeton (6:19.897) and one second behind second place Brown (6:20.550). They will race in tomorrow's C/D Semifinal.
The USC Varsity Four fought hard in their morning heat, but placed fourth with a time of (7:39.198) behind Washington (7:06.045), Stanford (7:18.708) and Brown (7:23.533).
In the repechage, the Varsity Four finished in fifth place behind Washington (7:07.393), Iowa (7:09.427), Wisconsin (7:11.428) and Navy (7:20.463). USC's Varsity Four will compete in the C/D Semifinal tomorrow morning.
