The two Trojan greats will don the red, white, and blue for the Team USA Fall Classic in October.
SPARKS, Md. – USC All-American midfielder and former assistant coach Amanda Johansen (Glen Head, N.Y.) and World Champion goalie Gussie Johns (Washington, D.C.) were each named to the U.S. Women's National Team roster on Tuesday, Sept. 4, by first-year head coach Jenny Levy. The two Women of Troy will don the red, white, and blue as part of a special 27-player roster that will take the field against NCAA champion James Madison in the Team USA Fall Classic at US Lacrosse headquarters on Saturday, Oct. 6.
Â
"Our coaching staff is excited for our first training camp and to coach this talented group of athletes," Levy said. "By 2021, our goal is to work with at least 80 players to build a hardworking, exciting, and cohesive team to represent the USWNT in the next World Cup. We are using a new process to identify our team and although change can create uncertainty, I am confident that the process will excite and energize elite players who want the opportunity to demonstrate excellence, skill, creativity, and team play at the highest level."
Â
Including Johns, the 27-player roster includes 12 of the 18 players that won gold with the 2017 U.S. World Cup team, a handful of other veterans from the U.S. team program and several recent college graduates. Other returning World Cup players include Alex Aust, Becca Block, Kristen Carr, Taylor Cummings, Megan Douty, Brooke Griffin, Katie Haus, Marie McCool, Alice Mercer, Kayla Treanor and Michelle Tumolo.
Â
Johns and McCool were both seniors in college last year and will be joined by eight other members of the Class of 2018: Kasey Behr, Sarah Brown, Kristen Gaudian, Kelly Glatthorn, Courtney Murphy, Katie O'Donnell, Kylie Ohlmiller, and Shayna Pirreca.
Â
The matchup with James Madison is the second game of a doubleheader at US Lacrosse schedule for Oct. 6 featuring the reigning world and national champions. The day opens with the U.S. Men playing Yale at noon ET. Tickets are available online with a $5 savings over the walk-up price. Proceeds benefit the U.S. National Team programs.
Â
Current USC freshman attacker Erin Bakes (Miami, Fla.) was named as one of 36 players on the 2019 U19 National Team's training squad earlier this month (Aug. 12). Bakes will join the U19 team for a training weekend Oct. 5-8 in conjunction with the Fall Classic.
