Chinese freshman's first round marks fourth straight round under 70 to start career.
Freshman Yuxin Lin returned to the Trojan lineup and fired his fourth sub-70 in a row to start his career to grab a share of first while junior Kaito Onishi was under par for the first time this season, leading the USC men's golf team in the first round of the Golf Club of Georgia Collegiate Invitational on Friday (Oct. 18) in Alpharetta, Ga.
USC, which got off to a fast start thanks to four birdies on the first hole, ultimately combined for a 1-over 289, tied for seventh in the 14-team field that includes seven top 25 teams. Pepperdine took the first-round lead at 12-under 276 while Stanford was second (283) and Duke third (284). Host and top-ranked Georgia Tech is a shot behind USC.
Lin, who missed USC's previous tournament while playing in the Asia-Pacific Amateur, which he won for the second time, finished the first round at 5-under, a birdie on 18 pushing him into a three-way tie for first. He opened his round with birdies on 1 and 2 and connected on two more on 11 and 15 before reaching 18.
Combined with his three rounds at the Maui Jim Classic, Lin's stroke average sits at 67.50 in his first four collegiate rounds.
Onishi turned in his best effort of the season with his 2-under 70 and is tied for 11th. He raced to three-under with birdies on 3, 4 and 5 and had another on 7 en route to a 2-under front 9 before finishing the back 9 with nine pars.
Sophomore Charlie Reiter and junior Issei Tanabe are tied for 61st at 4-over 76 and sophomore Cameron Henry is tied for 77th at 12-over 84.
The Trojans, the defending champions of the event, will tee off at 6 a.m. PT in the second round. Results are available at Golfstat.com.
