Onishi leads second-day efforts with 1-over 73.
Juniors Kaito Onishi and Issei Tanabe shot a 1-over 73 and 2-over 74, respectively, in the second round of the Golf Club of Georgia Collegiate Invitational on Saturday (Oct. 19) at The Golf Club of Georgia's Lakeside Course in Alpharetta, Ga., leading the USC men's golf team's efforts.
Fighting steady rain and winds averaging 9 mph and reaching up to 23 mph from start to finish, the Trojans posted a team score of 15-over 303.
After dealing with treacherous conditions all day, USC finds itself 17 strokes back of first place Duke and tied for 11th with East Tennessee State at 16-over 592 (289-303) through two rounds.
High scores abounded on day 2 of the tournament, with Duke posting a low for the round at just 3-over, and the majority of teams posting scores well above 10-over par.
Onishi, Tanabe and freshman Yuxin Lin each recorded a pair of birdies on the day. Onishi's came on holes 8 and 15, while Tanabe opened his round with a birdie on hole one and closed it with a birdie on hole 18. Meanwhile, Lin birdied holes 2 and 9.
Through 36 holes, Onishi finds himself tied for seventh at 1-under 143 (70-73), four back, while Lin is in a deadlock for 15th at 1-over 145 (67-78). Tanabe is tied for 45th at 6-over 150 (76-74).
Lin's 78 is his first round over 70 as a Trojan after averaging 67.50 strokes in his first four outings.
After a solid 2-over par showing on the front nine, sophomore Charlie Reiter struggled as the day wore on, finishing at 7-over 79. He is now tied for 65th at 11-over 155 (76-79). Fellow sophomore Cameron Henry had a similar outcome, wrapping up the front nine at just 2-over, but heading back to the clubhouse with a 6-over 78. He is 78th at 18-over 162 (84-78).
The Trojans will hope for better weather and a move up the leaderboard in the final round of the competition Sunday. USC tees off at 6:31 a.m.
