USC Women Edged Out In Corvallis By No. 8 Oregon State
February 22, 2019 | Women's Basketball, Features
Aliyah Mazyck scores a game-high 25 points for the Trojans on the road.
CORVALLIS, ORE. — The USC women's basketball team pushed another top-10 opponent to the limit but again saw its ranked Pac-12 foe find the late buckets needed to edge out the Trojans. Tonight it was No. 8 Oregon State who overcame USC's early 16-0 rally and got the last word in a final 69-61 Beaver victory in Corvallis. USC goes to 15-11 overall and to 5-10 in Pac-12 play with the road loss, while Oregon State improves to 22-5, 12-3.
USC opened up a 16-0 lead on the Beavers, shooting 52.9 percent in the first frame while OSU went without a bucket for the first seven minutes of action. By the end of the first, USC gripped a 21-10 lead on its host. OSU countered and disrupted the USC offense in the next stretch, however, holding USC to just six points in the second period while carving down the deficit to one by halftime, down 27-26. USC had wound up going 42.9 percent from the floor in the first half, with OSU at 34.5 percent.
USC would rebound from that second quarter slump and work back ahead, only to have Oregon State mount a late comeback push to victory. By the final buzzer, USC had shot 43.3 percent from the floor to OSU's 43.6 percent. The Beavers buried six 3-pointers compared to five from USC — all by Aliyah Mazyck — and would also edge out the Trojans on the boards 35-33. The real difference-maker in this one was the foul count, which tipped against the Trojans 22-10 and saw the hosts go 14-of-21 from the free-throw line to overpower USC's 4-of-6 outing from the stripe.
USC was paced by a game-high 25 points from Aliyah Mazyck, along with 14 from Kayla Overbeck and 10 from Asiah Jones. Minyon Moore served up eight assists and had a team-high seven rebounds, while Mariya Moore had six assists and nabbed a career-high five steals for the Trojan cause. Oregon State had four players finish in double figures: Mikayla Pivec (18), Destiny Slocum (16), Joanna Grymek (13) and Aleah Goodman (11).
USC unleashed an all-out attack on the Beavers, who couldn't find an answer to the Trojan onslaught until seven minutes had passed in the first frame. By that time, USC had built out a 16-0 lead with four Trojans contributing to that opening rally. Kayla Overbeck scored six in the rally, while Mariya Moore issued three assists to help USC shock its hosts out of the gates. Oregon would find its scoring touch in the last few minutes, but USC still had some key buckets on-hand along with one last block from Minyon Moore to wrap the first with USC up 21-10. The Beavers adjusted in the next quarter, and USC managed just six points while OSU carved into the Trojan lead. Free throws helped. The foul count tipped against the Trojans to interrupt otherwise strong defense by USC. By the halftime buzzer, the Beavers had trimmed the deficit to one, with USC up 27-26 at the break.
USC found a spark in the third from Overbeck and Ja'Tavia Tapley, who were clicking in the paint to help chug the Trojans along on a 10-0 run that carried them back into the lead, up 39-32 with 5:45 on the clock. OSU fought back again and tied it up 42-42 with 1:49 left in the third, and then Aliyah Mazyck busted out a 3-pointer to tug USC back on top. One free throw would fall for the Beavers before the end of the frame, and USC carried a 45-43 advantage into the fourth. Asiah Jones opened the fourth with back-to-back buckets in the paint for an early lift for the Trojans, getting up 49-43 a minute into the final frame. Mazyck would plant her fourth and fifth 3-pointers around one from the Beavers soon after, and USC was up 57-50 with 5:20 to go. Again the Beavers fought back, making an 8-0 run that took OSU into the lead, up 58-57 with 2:05 remaining. Jones struck again to get USC the lead and herself into double digits, only to see OSU bury back-breaking 3-pointers — one to take a 61-59 lead at 1:15 and another fall-down three to beat a shotclock buzzer that hd featured stringent Trojan defense. That got the Beavers up 64-59 with 32 seconds left, and USC could not chip away further as the hosts emerged with the 68-61 final victory.
USC now turns to take on No. 3 Oregon in an 11 a.m. clash on Sunday (Feb. 24) in Eugene.
