USC Women’s Tennis Falls to California 5-2 in Non-Conference Match

The No. 17 USC women's tennis team lost to No. 24 California 5-2 on Saturday (Feb. 24) in Berkeley, Calif. in a non-conference match. The Women of Troy are now 4-2 this season.
The Golden Bears came out swinging to nab the first win of the day as Hauger/Stloukalova defeated Willson/Weissmann 6-3 on court three. The Trojans came back fighting as Kulikov/Valdes blasted their way to a 6-4 win over Cal's No. 28 Rosenqvist/Mraz on court one. Court two decided the doubles point as Golden Bear duo No. 23 Bright/Dunk beat USC's Branstine/Jaeger 6-4 put the first point on the board for Cal.
Cal continued to roll with their established momentum into singles as No. 20 Olivia Hauger defeated Trojan Angela Kulikov 6-2, 6-1 on court two. Golden Bear Katerina Stloukalova increased the overall score 3-0 by beating USC's Rianna Valdes 6-4, 6-4 on court three.
Cal's next victory by Maria Smith over Trojan Becca Weissmann on court five would clinch the match for the Golden Bears.
Although Cal had already clinched, the remaining courts were played out. USC's Danielle Willson won her match against Hana Mraz on court six 6-1, 3-6, 6-4. With this victory, Willson extends her winning streak to six matches and she remains undefeated in dual matches (5-0).
On court one, Trojan No. 34 Salma Ewing fell to Cal's No. 45 Julia Rosenqvist 5-7, 7-5, 1-0 (10-5), and Trojan Ana Neffa defeated Golden Bear No. 69 Anna Bright 6-4, 7-6 (9) on court four.
The Trojans will have another opportunity to take on the Golden Bears at home in Marks Stadium on March 29 in a match that will count towards Pac-12 Conference play.
USC returns to Los Angeles to prepare for a busy week of competition. The Women of Troy will challenge San Diego State on Tuesday (Feb. 26) at home and then travel across town to face UCLA in Westwood, Calif. for a non-conference match that will be televised on the Pac-12 Network. The team then returns home to Marks Stadium for a doubleheader as they take on Saint Mary's and Hawai'i on Sunday (March 3).
