February 27, 2019 | Women's Beach Volleyball, Features
The Women of Troy downed the Lions in the day’s first match, but were edged, 3-2, by crosstown rival UCLA
LOS ANGELES – The second-ranked USC beach volleyball team (1-1) started the season with a 4-1 victory over No. 13 Loyola Marymount (3-1) but fell to top-ranked defending NCAA champion UCLA (6-0) in a tight 3-2 battle at Merle Norman Stadium on Wednesday, Feb. 27.
In the day's first dual, Trojans went the distance to earn a 2-0 lead with a pair of three-set victories. At the No. 3 position, Haley Hallgren and Alexandra Poletto took down LMU's Bo Culo and Megan Rich, 22-20, 18-21, 17-15, moments before Cammie Dorn and Mollie Ebertin wrapped up a 21-18, 26-28, 15-13 win over Erin Martin and Veronica Nederend at No. 5.
The clinching point came from the top court where Abril Bustamante and Tina Graudina swept away Reka Orsi Toth and Savannah Slattery, 21-17, 21-13. The Lions earned their only point from a win at court four where Sara Kovac and Jessie Prichard defeated Joy Dennis and Maja Kaiser, 21-19, 21-16. USC made the final score, 4-1, following a three-set win by Terese Cannon and Sammy Slater, 18-21, 21-15, 15-9, at the No. 2 position.
In as tight a match as they come, the Bruins took the first dual point at court five where Izzy Carey and Megan Muret held off Dorn and Ebertin for a 22-20, 22-20 victory. In another three-setter, the Women of Troy pulled even with a win at court three where Hallgren and Poletto defeated Mac May and Savvy Simo, 21-15, 19-21, 15-12.
UCLA moved in front once more on a win at court four where Lindsey Sparks and Abby Van Winkle earned a 21-17, 21-17 win over Dennis and Kaiser. The Bruin lead was short-lived however as USC equalized a second time with a straight-set win on court one where Bustamante and Graudina defeated Megan and Nicole McNamara, 21-16, 21-18.
With all eyes on the No. 2 position, the Bruins completed the 3-2 victory with a 21-18, 21-14 win there. Lily Justine and Sarah Sponcil took down Cannon and Slater for the clinching point and the Bruins' fifth straight win over the Trojans. USC fell to 9-7 all-time against UCLA and dropped to 45-8 in home matches at Merle Norman Stadium. The win over LMU improved USC's streak over the Lions to 19 straight without a loss.
The loss to UCLA also dropped the Trojans' record in No. 1 vs. No. 2 matchups to 7-5 all-time. USC is 5-3 in those matches when ranked No. 1 but fell to 2-2 when ranked No. 2.
Up next, the Women of Troy head to Tucson, Ariz., for the Pac-12 South Invitational where they will face No. 14 Arizona (3-0), No. 12 Stanford (0-4), and Oregon (0-0) this weekend (March 2-3) at Bear Down Beach. All matches will be shown live on Pac-12 Networks.
