The Women of Troy earned the first 5-0 sweep of the 2019 season over Pac-12 South Invitational host Arizona
TUCSON, Ariz. – The second-ranked USC beach volleyball team (2-1) took down 14th-ranked Arizona (3-1) and handed the Wildcats their first loss of the season with a 5-0 sweep at Bear Down Beach on Saturday, March 2, at the Pac-12 South Invitational.
The Women of Troy clinched the dual over the tournament hosts with a trio of straight-set wins at the top three courts. First, senior Abril Bustamante and sophomore Tina Graudina overcame a slow start to take out Olivia Hallaran and Madison Rigdon at the No. 1 position, 21-15, 21-10. Shortly thereafter, sophomore Haley Hallgren and senior Alexandra Poletto earned a 21-17, 21-12 win at the third court over Jordan Abalos and Jonny Baham to give the Trojans a 2-0 lead in the dual.
The clinching point came from the No. 2 pair where senior Terese Cannon and sophomore Sammy Slater took out Natalie Anselmo and Mia Mason, 21-18, 21-14. With the dual decided, each of the matches at No. 4 and No. 5 went to third sets.
At No. 5, junior Cammie Dorn and freshman Mollie Ebertin won the first, 21-18, over Ainise Havili and Dana Parker, but dropped the second by the same score. The Trojan duo came up with a 15-11 win in the third to post a fourth dual point to the USC side of the scoreboard. At court four, junior Joy Dennis and sophomore Maja Kaiser fell, 22-20, to Sarah Blacker and Jasmine Safar in the first, but walked away with a 21-13 win in the second and overcame a three-point hole in the third to win, 15-13.
Up next, the Women of Troy face No. 12 Stanford (0-4) in their second match of the day. First serve is set for 2:15 p.m. PT and the dual will be shown in its entirety on the Pac-12 Networks.
