USC Women Ice An 84-80 Road Upset At No. 17 Utah
February 08, 2019 | Women's Basketball, Features
Mariya Moore scores 23 in an important Pac-12 victory for the Women of Troy
SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH — The USC women's basketball team iced a big road upset with a composed finish to an 84-80 victory at No. 17 Utah tonight in Salt Lake City. The Trojans saw a once-double-digit lead melt away in the fourth quarter, but had several players come up with big final plays to round out the road win. USC improves to 14-8 overall and to 4-7 in Pac-12 play with its third straight win. No. 17 Utah goes to 18-4, 7-4 with the loss to the visiting Trojans.
USC and Utah were both hot-handed in this first half, with the Trojans' 54-percent effort from the floor edged out just slightly by the Utes' 55-percent output. Through those first 20 minutes, though, it was USC that had clicked off 50 points — just one off its season-high — in converting 11 second-chance points to grip a 50-42 lead on its ranked hosts by halftime. USC was outrebounding the Utes 21-11 to help generate those opportunities to maneuver into the lead. In the second half, the Trojans cooled on the offensive end, but also remained cool and collected when it counted in fending off the Utes' late efforts. By the final buzzer, USC had shot 47.1 percent from the floor to trail Utah's 51.7 percent outing. The Trojans won out on the boards 38-32, though, and countered Utah's 10 threes made by scoring 18 points of turnovers to go with 18 second-chance points in the game.
USC was paced by Mariya Moore's 23 points, which included three 3-pointers nailed, while Aliyah Mazyck had 16 points and three steals. Minyon Moore was next with 13 points and a team-high eight rebounds to go along with a career-high 12 points from Asiah Jones, who also had five rebounds and two blocks.
Utah received a game-high 24 points from Dru Glyton, who was a perfect 8-of-8 from the free-throw line. Four other Utes hit doubles figures, with Megan Huff recording a double-double on 13 points and 10 rebounds, while Kiana Moore had 11 points and Dre'Una Edwards and Andrea Torres had 10 each.
The game tied up eight times in the first 14 minutes before the Trojans turned a 33-31 deficit into a 9-0 scoring surge that carried USC into the lead. With five straight points from Kayla Overbeck sparking the run, USC pumped into a 40-33 lead with 4:00 left in the first half. Hot-handed from the start, USC senior Mariya Moore kept chugging and knocked down her third 3-pointer of the half before later following a big bucket from Asiah Jones with one of her own to wrap the half with USC up 50-42.
In the second half, USC would get out to its largest lead of the game, up 63-57 after mounting a 7-0 surge as freshman Desiree Caldwell joined the scoresheet during that Trojan rally. Mariya Moore worked her way to 22 points on the night with two free throws to wrap the third with USC up 68-59, but the Utes fired back. Utah scored the first nine points of the fourth quarter to bring up the game's nine tie at 68-68, but Jones stepped in for a go-ahead bucket for USC. Utah fought back to lock it up again at 71-71 with 4:28 to go, only to see Jones knock down another jumper — her career-high 12th points of the night to put USC in a lead that it would end up holding onto down the stretch, up 73-71 with 4:15 on the clock.
Jones' basket sparked a 6-0 rally as Aliyah Mazyck scored back-to-back buckets next. That 77-71 USC margin wound up being key. After Ja'Tavia Tapley scored a huge basket for the Trojans in the final minute, Utah got to within two on a trip to the stripe. A while final 30 seconds would ensue, as the teams traded steals around a 3-pointer from Utah that had it at 82-80 USC with 16 seconds left. Utah would get the ball back after its takeaway, and then Mariya Moore delivered the deciding blow — a booming block on a Utah 3-point try that was followed buy two icing free throws from Tapley with 1.8 ticks to go, helping USC to an 84-80 final upset win for the Trojans over the Utes.
