No. 16 USC Men Fall Short Of No. 6 Baylor In BNP Paribas Challenge Final

Bears beat the Trojans 4-2 to win the title in Indian Wells.
INDIAN WELLS, CALIF. — The No. 16 USC men's tennis team reined in No. 6 Baylor but was unable to make the winning move in the title match at the BNP Paribas Open Collegiate Challenge today in Indian Wells. The 4-2 defeat takes the Trojans to 10-6 overall on the year
Baylor would scoop up the doubles point on wins from courts one and three. At the top spot, USC's #28 Brandon Holt and Riley Smith were up against Baylor's #2 Bedeck/Lah, and the Bear pair worked out ahead to claim a 6-2 win. While USC's Jack Jaede and Laurens Verboven were moving into position with the lead on court two, Baylor grabbed the doubles point with a 6-3 win over USC's Daniel Cukierman and Tanner Smith on court three to bring up singles with Baylor leading 1-0.
Singles play was a tighter affair, with USC winning first sets on two courts while Baylor claimed first sets on four others. On court two, Baylor's #77 Matias Soto would upend USC's #6 Daniel Cukierman with a 6-3, 6-2 decision to make it a 2-0 Baylor advantage. Riley Smith broke up Baylor's efforts with a 6-3, 7-6 (3) win on court four over Adrian Bolton, but Baylor was still able to pocket a 6-2, 6-4 victory on court five as Sven Lah topped USC's More Bulis, and the scoreboard read 3-1 Baylor. On court one, USC's #16 Brandon Holt closed the gap to one with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Baylor's #42 Johannes Schretter, leaving tight matches raging on on courts three and six with USC within one at 3-2. USC's #23 senior Lauren's Verboven had dug himself out of a first-set hole and was looking sharp after winning the second and closing in on victory in the third, but Baylor interrupted his flow when Bear Jimmy Bendeck edge out USC freshman Jake Sands on court six, handing the Trojan his first loss at the event with a 7-6 (2), 6-4 decision that got Baylor the win with a final 4-2 score.
Next up for the Trojans is a trip to Texas to take on the Longhorns next Sunday (March 24) at 2 p.m. CT in Austin.
