THIS SEASON: Riley Smith returns for a fifth season at USC after his true senior season was cut short due to the coronavirus pandemic.
2019-20: Smith was ranked No. 25 in the nation and held a 17-5 overall singles record with a five-match win streak when competition was cancelled in March 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic... Was 6-1 in dual-match play, going 2-0 at No. 2 and 4-1 at No. 3... Named to the ITA National Team Indoor All-Tournament Team at the No. 1 doubles spot with Daniel Cukierman... Earned ITA All-America honors in doubles... In doubles, Smith was ranked No. 5 in the nation with Cukierman and No. 53 with Stefan Dostanic... Had gone 27-5 overall in doubles with an 11-1 mark in dual matches... Went 10-1 with Cukierman... Also paired with Dostanic (3-1), Bradley Frye (5-2), Brandon Holt (5-0), Ryder Jackson (3-1) and Jake Sands (1-0)... In the fall, won the ITA Southwest Regional doubles championship with Holt... Also reached the Battle in the Bay doubles final with Jackson.
2018-19: Smith finished his junior season ranked No. 14 in the nation in doubles with Brandon Holt... Made his third career appearance in the NCAA Doubles draw with Holt with a Round of 32 appearance... Reached highest career doubles (No. 2) ranking on Sept. 11, 2018 with Holt... Went 13-12 overall and 9-9 in dual-match singles, playing at the No. 2 (1-0), No. 3 (0-2), No. 4 (6-4) and No. 5 (2-3) positions... Clinched USC’s wins over UCLA and San Diego... In doubles, went 20-9 overall and 15-6 in dual matches... Was 15-7 overall with Holt, going 12-5 in dual matches at the No. 1 position... Also paired with Daniel Cukierman (2-1) and Tanner Smith (2-1... Went 4-3 in fall singles play... Reached the semifinals at the ITA Southwest Regionals with Holt during the fall.
2017-18: Smith finished his sophomore season ranked No. 9 in doubles with partner Brandon Holt... Held highest doubles rank at No. 6 with Holt to start the preseason... Had the clinching singles win in two matches... An ITA All-American in doubles... In singles, went 6-7 overall and in dual matches... Played at the No. 3 (0-1), No. 4 (0-3), No. 5 (5-2) and No. 6 (1-1) positions... In doubles, went 17-6 overall with a 16-5 mark in dual matches... Went 17-5 overall and 16-4 at the No. 1 slot with Holt and was 0-1 at No. 2 with Mateusz Smolicki... Held a 10-match win streak during the spring with Holt... Reached the NCAA Doubles Round of 16 with Holt, upsetting 5-8 seeds Touliatos/Valero of Tennessee in the Round of 32... In the fall, reached the ITA Southwest Regional semifinals with Jack Jaede.
2016-17: Smith finished his freshman season ranked No. 11 in doubles with partner Brandon Holt... Held highest doubles rank at No. 10 with Holt on April 18... Had the clinching singles win in four dual matches... Named Pac-12 Player of the Week on March 20... Earned a place in the NCAA Doubles draw with Holt, falling in the opening Round of 32... Went 24-7 overall in singles, going a near-perfect 20-2 in dual matches... Played primarily at the No. 6 position (15-2)... Also played at No. 3 (2-0), No. 4 (2-0) and No. 4 (1-0)... In doubles, went 25-8 overall with an 18-4 mark at No. 1 in dual matches — all with Holt... Held a 14-match singles win streak from Feb. 9-April 28... HIGH SCHOOL: Smith helped lead his Los Alamitos High team to the CIF championship as a junior... A two-time Long Beach Press-Telegram Player of the Year... Won back-to-back league singles titles... Reached the doubles final at the U.S. Open Juniors... Placed third at U.S. Nationals... Won the Southern California doubles championship twice... Paired with fellow incoming USC freshman Brandon Holt to win the Laguna Niguel Futures 10K doubles title.
PERSONAL: Riley Smith was born June 5, 1997 in Fresno, Calif... Parents are Peter and Tammie... Has two brothers, Tanner and Colter... Tanner also played tennis at USC and graduated in 2019... Riley is currently on the USC tennis team… His father Peter played professional tennis and coached USC to five NCAA championships... Lists Stevie Johnson as his biggest sports hero...Has always wanted to win an NCAA championship... Hopes to travel to Australia... Would like to play professional tennis after graduation... Completed his undergraduate degree in economics and is pursuing a master’s in business taxation.
