March 07, 2019 | Women's Basketball, Features
Arizona beats USC 76-48 in Las Vegas.
LAS VEGAS, NEV. — The USC women's basketball team came up against a well-balanced Arizona squad in the first round of the Pac-12 Tournament and was unable to keep pace with the Wildcats. No. 9 seeded USC would fall 76-48 to No. 8 seed Arizona at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, moving to 17-13 overall on the year.
Arizona had the hot hand in the first half, nailing six 3-pointers and going 56.7 percent overall from the floor while USC stalled out significantly in the second quarter. After trailing 21-14 after 10 minutes, USC was in a 44-21 hole by halftime after going 1-of-16 from the floor in the second quarter. The Trojans had shot just 23.5 percent in the first half. Try as they may, the Trojans were unable to make up ground on the Wildcats in the second half. By the final buzzer, USC had shot 25.8 percent overall to outpace Arizona's hefty 57.4 percent. Arizona also went 8-pf-16 from 3-point range, while USC went 4-of-18. Arizona also won out on the boards 41-28.
USC received a team-high 12 points from Mariya Moore and 11 points from Kayla Overbeck. Arizona, meanwhile, got a double-double from Cate Reese with 19 points and 11 rebounds. Aari McDonald also had 19 points, with Tee Tee Starks adding 14 and 10 from Sam Thomas.
Arizona knocked down some key 3-pointers in the first stretch to counter a tough inside game for USC, fueled by eight points from Kayla Overbeck down low. The Wildcats' perimeter power propelled them to a 21-14 lead by the end of the first. In the second quarter, Arizona opened up with six straight points to build out a 27-14 lead until Minyon Moore got to the line and sank two tosses with 6:31 on the clock. Arizona would keep charging, planting three more 3-pointers in the last five minutes of the half while Aliyah Mazyck managed to hit USC's first and only three of the half. That left USC in a 44-21 hole by halftime.
USC needed to carve down the deficit in the third but instead just managed to keep pace with the Wildcats, getting to the line and hitting 12-of-14 tosses while Kayla Overbeck and Mariya Moore worked their way into double digits. Moore beat the buzzer with a 3-pointer to end the third with the score at 60-36 Arizona. USC wasn't able to make up ground in the fourth, and wound up with a 76-48 loss to the Wildcats. USC's 48-point outing was a season low for the Women of Troy.
