Women of Troy Defeat Wildcats in Pac-12 Opener

The USC women's tennis team opened Pac-12 Conference play today (March 8) with a 6-1 victory over Arizona in Tucson, Ariz. The Women of Troy hold a 9-2 overall record on the season and are 1-0 in conference play.
The Wildcats came out of the gate hot as Wilson/Thomas beat USC's Kulikov/Valdes 6-1 on court one. The Trojans powered through and notched a win of their own as the Branstine/Jaeger defeated Arizona's Zandberg/Van Aelst 6-1 on court three. USC closed out the doubles portion of the competition as Weissmann/Willson beat Wesbrooks/Heynemans 6-4 on court two.
When singles began, Arizona's Emma Wilson beat No. 45 Salma Ewing 6-3, 6-4 on court one to put a point on the board for the Wildcats. On court five, Constance Branstine pushed the Trojans ahead with her 6-4, 6-4 victory over Wildcat Gitte Heynemans.
The Trojans continued to claim wins as Becca Weissmann defeated Marie Van Aelst 7-6 (8), 6-2 on court three. USC's No. 118 Danielle Willson clinched the match for the Women of Troy with a 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 victory over Tayla Zandberg on court four. This win extends Willson's winning streak to 10 victories, and she remains undefeated in dual matches (9-0).
Although USC had already won the match, the remaining courts were played out. Trojan No. 84 Angela Kulikov defeated Wildcat Camila Wesbrooks 7-5, 6-7 (5), 1-0 (11-9) on court two, and Sydney Van Alphen closed out the match with a win over Arizona's Csenge Furak 5-7, 6-1, 6-3.
Up next, the Trojans travel to Tempe, Ariz. to take on the Arizona State Sun Devils on Saturday (March 9) at 11 a.m. PT.
